Chapter 6 - The Healing and the Rebirth

Two weeks later. The morning sun streamed through the wide windows of the Mercer family estate in the countryside. Away from the noise of the city, the air was clean, filled with the scent of pine trees and blooming jasmine. Evelyn sat on the wide wrap-around porch, sipping warm chamomile tea. She wore a soft cream knit sweater that gently draped over her full bump. The physical bruises on her ribs had faded to faint yellow marks, but the peace in her heart was entirely restored.

The sound of a gravel driveway crunching signaled the arrival of her brothers. Nathan, Cole, and Daniel walked up the porch steps, carrying armfuls of legal documents, baby gifts, and fresh pastries from Evelyn’s favorite bakery. “You three look like you’re delivering an entire department store,” Evelyn laughed softly, setting her teacup down. “Only the best for my favorite sister,” Daniel said, dropping a massive stuffed teddy bear onto the outdoor sofa before grabbing a croissant. “And for my future niece.”

Cole sat beside Evelyn, quickly checking her pulse and giving her a warm, protective squeeze on her shoulder. “How are you feeling today, Evie? Any pain?” “None at all, Cole,” Evelyn smiled warmly. “The doctor says everything is progressing perfectly. I’m thirty-four weeks now. Just six more weeks to go.” Nathan pulled up a chair across from her, laying a single leather folder on the wooden table. “The final divorce decree was signed by the judge yesterday morning,” Nathan said gently. “Grant waived all parental rights as part of his plea deal. The court has officially restored your maiden name. You are Evelyn Mercer again.”

Evelyn picked up the folder, opening it to see her signature alongside the official seal of the state court. A profound sense of relief washed over her. The legal tie that had bound her to six years of toxicity and fear was finally broken. “And Grant?” Evelyn asked quietly. “His trial was fast-tracked,” Daniel replied, pulling up news reports on his phone. “With the mountain of evidence, his legal team advised him to plead guilty to all major counts. He was sentenced yesterday afternoon to fifteen years in state prison, with no possibility of parole for at least ten.”

“And Celeste?” “She received eight years for financial espionage,” Daniel added. “Her career, her assets, and her reputation are entirely destroyed.” Evelyn closed the folder, looking out at the sprawling green lawn of her family estate. “It’s over,” she whispered. “It’s over,” Nathan agreed, reaching out to cover her hand with his broad, warm palm. “Now, let’s talk about your future.”

Nathan opened a second document, turning it toward Evelyn. It was a official corporate charter. At the top, in elegant silver lettering, were the words: THE MERCER RESORT & FORENSIC HOLDINGS GROUP. Evelyn looked at Nathan, puzzled. “What is this?” “We restructured the entire hotel network,” Nathan explained with a proud smile. “We eliminated the Holloway name entirely. We bought out the remaining board members and consolidated thirty luxury properties into a brand new entity.” He tapped the signature line at the bottom of the charter. “We want you to take over as Chief Executive Officer, Evelyn.”

Evelyn stared at her brothers in shock. “CEO? Nathan... I’m about to have a baby.” “Which is why you have three brothers who own tech companies, hospitals, and aerospace networks to back you up,” Daniel chimed in with a grin. “You spent four years inside Mercer Capital tracking fraud better than anyone in the country. You exposed Grant’s entire scheme in less than an hour while pregnant and held at sword-point. You are the smartest mind in this family, Evie.” “We built a private nursery on the top floor of the new corporate headquarters,” Cole added gently. “You can work on your own terms, on your own time. You will never have to hide your brilliance again.”

Tears gathered in Evelyn’s eyes—not tears of sadness or fear, but of profound gratitude and pride. For years, she had diminished her own light to fit into a husband’s fragile world. Now, standing among the men who had protected her and believed in her since childhood, she realized she never had to shrink herself again. “Okay,” Evelyn said, wiping a happy tear from her eye, a bright, beautiful smile spreading across her face. “I’ll do it.”
