Chapter 8 - A New Dawn: True Wealth Restored

I stopped directly in front of Emma. Up close, the damage done to her by my toxic family was even more heartbreaking. Her skin was pale, her eyes haunted by years of isolation, intimidation, and brutal slave labor inside the very home I built to protect her.

Without a word, I reached out and gently took her raw, blistered hands into mine. She flinched slightly, expecting another blow or a harsh command, before realizing who was holding her.

"Liam..." she sobbed softly, her voice breaking as she looked up into my eyes. "I... I tried so hard to please them. They told me if I didn't do what they said, you would abandon me, that you were ashamed of me because I didn't fit into your new high-class life..."

"Look at me, Emma," I whispered, my own voice thick with emotion as I cupped her tear-streaked face with my free hand. "I could never, ever be ashamed of you. You are my home. You are my foundation. Every single thing I built, I built for you. The moment I trusted them instead of you was the biggest mistake of my life, and I am so, so sorry for failing to protect you."

Emma shook her head, tears streaming down her face, and threw her arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder. I pulled her tightly against my chest, holding her as if I never wanted to let go, letting her wash away five years of accumulated pain, fear, and loneliness.

After a long moment, I pulled back gently. I reached deep into my coat pocket and pulled out the small velvet box I had carried across continents.

I popped the lid open. Inside, under the warm Dallas evening sun, a magnificent diamond necklace caught the light, sparkling brilliantly.

"This was supposed to be a surprise gift for surviving five years apart," I whispered softly, lifting the necklace from its velvet bed. "Instead, it's a symbol of a brand new beginning. The parasites are gone. They will never set foot on this property again. From this moment on, it's just you and me—the way it always should have been."

Emma looked down at the necklace, then up at me, a watery, beautiful smile finally breaking through her tears. She nodded slowly.

May you like

"Just you and me, Liam."

I fastened the diamond necklace around her neck, watched it sparkle against her skin, and kissed her forehead. The nightmare of the past five years was finally over, and our true future together was finally, beautifully beginning.
