Chapter 10 - Healing Old Wounds

The afternoon sun streamed warmly through the spotless, private recovery room of St. Jude’s Medical Center, casting a golden glow over the crisp white sheets where Sadi’s mother sat propped up against a pile of pillows. The harsh, sterile smell of hospital disinfectant had been replaced by the subtle, sweet fragrance of a massive arrangement of white orchids resting on the windowsill—flowers that had arrived two hours earlier with an attached card bearing no signature, just a clean, elegant monogram of the letter M. Sadi sat in a comfortable leather armchair beside the bed, peeling an orange for her mother while recounting the whirlwind events of the past week with a light, easy laugh that she hadn't genuinely emitted in years. Her mother, whose cheeks had regained a healthy, natural flush thanks to the experimental medical treatments that were now fully and permanently paid for, listened with wide, tear-filled eyes. “I still can’t believe all of this is real, sweetheart,” her mother whispered, her frail hand reaching out to squeeze Sadi’s fingers tenderly. “One month ago, we were drowning in debt, terrified that I was going to be discharged, and you were working sixty-hour weeks in that wretched diner. Now you tell me you’re the chief legal counsel for one of the most powerful corporate empires in the city?” Sadi smiled, pressing a soft kiss to her mother’s knuckles. “It’s real, Mom. Every single word. You never have to worry about medical bills or collection agencies ever again. The debt is gone, the account is settled for the next ten years, and my future is completely secure.” Her mother’s eyes softened with maternal intuition as she looked closely at the stunning platinum diamond ring sparkling brilliantly on Sadi’s left ring finger. A knowing, gentle smile touched her lips. “And that handsome, formidable man who came to visit me yesterday while you were at the office... the one who arranged for the private specialist team and the VIP recovery suite... he’s the reason you’re smiling like that, isn’t he?” Sadi felt a warm blush rise across her cheeks, her heart fluttering uncontrollably at the memory of Roman standing quietly by her mother’s bedside the previous afternoon, speaking with such quiet respect and genuine warmth that her mother had immediately fallen under his spell. “His name is Roman,” Sadi admitted softly, her voice dropping into an affectionate register. “He’s... complicated, Mom. He runs businesses in worlds most people only see in movies. But he’s also the first person who ever looked past my uniform, recognized my mind, and gave me a chance to fight back against the people who tried to crush us.” Her mother squeezed her hand tighter, her expression turning deeply earnest. “Life doesn’t hand out fairy tales, Sadi. When someone dangerous and powerful loves you enough to protect you with everything he has, you hold onto him with both hands. I’ve seen the way he looks at you. He’d burn this entire city to the ground before he let anyone hurt you.” Before Sadi could reply, the soft chime of her cell phone vibrated against the bedside table. She glanced down at the screen; a single text message from an unknown, secure number blinked in the center of the display: “Finishing up a final board meeting at headquarters. Car is waiting downstairs for you whenever you’re ready to come home, counselor.” Sadi smiled, typing a quick reply before slipping the phone back into her pocket. She leaned over and hugged her mother tightly, whispering promises to visit again tomorrow, before gathering her things and walking out into the bright afternoon sunlight, ready to embrace the extraordinary life she had fought so fiercely to claim.
