Chapter 9 - The Collapse of the Syndicate

The flashbulbs outside the grand jury room exploded in rapid succession, turning the sterile federal corridor into a strobe-lit nightmare for Arthur as federal marshals materialized from the shadows to block his escape. “Arthur Vance? Federal agents. Step away from the elevator,” a sharp voice commanded as two heavy sets of steel cuffs clicked onto Arthur’s wrists with a definitive, chilling snap. Arthur shrieked, thrashing wildly against the marshals, his expensive camel-hair coat sliding off his shoulders and pooling uselessly on the marble floor. “You can’t do this! I have an immunity deal! Call the District Attorney! Roman, you son of a bitch, this is a setup!” Roman didn’t even break stride as he walked past the thrashing, screaming man, his expression completely blank, untouchable, and sovereign. Sadi walked gracefully beside him, her head held high, ignoring the chaotic shouts of reporters shoving microphones toward her face. “Miss! Miss, are you representing the Moretti estate? Can you comment on the sudden collapse of the federal indictment?” shouted a prominent financial journalist, thrusting a recorder toward Sadi’s mouth. Sadi paused for a fraction of a second, looking directly into the camera lens with calm, unwavering authority. “There was never a legitimate indictment, only a desperate attempt by a corrupt individual to frame innocent business partners,” Sadi stated clearly and concisely. “Today, justice has been properly aligned with the truth.” Before the reporters could fire off another wave of questions, Roman’s bodyguards smoothly cleared a path, guiding Sadi and Roman through the side exit doors toward a waiting private car that whisked them away from the media storm. Inside the quiet, leather-lined interior of the SUV, the heavy tension that had gripped the past forty-eight hours finally dissipated, replaced by a profound, breathless stillness. Sadi leaned her head back against the plush seat, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the adrenaline slowly drained from her veins. Her hands were finally steady. The $50,000 check from weeks ago felt like a distant lifetime away; she was no longer a terrified, debt-ridden diner waitress hiding from collection agencies and medical bills. She was the brilliant legal architect who had just dismantled an underworld conspiracy and saved an empire from destruction. Roman slid closer to her on the seat, his dark eyes softening as he reached out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His fingers grazed her cheek, warm and gentle, contrasting sharply with the ruthless iron he had displayed in the courthouse minutes earlier. “You were magnificent back there,” Roman murmured, his voice low and rich. “I’ve spent my entire life surrounded by ruthless men and expensive corporate fixers who would have folded under the first sign of pressure. You walked into a federal corridor like you owned the building.” Sadi opened her eyes, turning her head to meet his intense, searching gaze. A soft, genuine smile touched her lips. “I learned from the best, Mr. Moretti. You taught me that when the wolves come knocking, you don’t run—you change the rules of the game.” Roman chuckled, a rich, dark sound that vibrated through the quiet cabin. He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, elegant black velvet box, resting it gently on the center console between them. Sadi blinked, her breath catching in her throat as she looked from the box back to his face. “What’s this?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper. Roman popped the lid open with his thumb, revealing a stunning, custom-designed platinum ring set with a brilliant, flawless diamond that caught the filtered sunlight streaming through the tinted windows. “A permanent retainer,” Roman said softly, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made the rest of the world vanish entirely. “No time limits, no hourly billing rates, and no escape clauses. I want you by my side, Sadi—running this entire enterprise, protecting my family, and sharing everything I’ve built.” Sadi stared at the ring, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as she realized that the dark, dangerous world she had stumbled into no longer felt like a trap, but a home she never knew she was searching for.
