Chapter 2 - The Falling House of Cards

The penthouse was quiet. Too quiet.

I sat in the dark living room, watching the city lights of Seattle flicker through the floor-to-ceiling windows. I didn't turn on the lamps. I didn't pour a drink. I just waited, listening to the soft tick of the grandfather clock—a wedding gift from my father.

At 11:30 PM, the private elevator chimed.

Adrian rushed in, his tie loosened, his face flushed with anger. He didn’t see me sitting in the shadow of the wingback chair. He was furiously typing on his phone.

"Damn it, Claire! Why are the cards declined?" he roared to the empty hallway, throwing his keys onto the marble console. "What did you do to the accounts?"

"I froze them," I said quietly.

Adrian jumped, gasping as he spun around. He found the light switch and flooded the room with harsh yellow light. He looked at me, his eyes wide, his breathing heavy.

"Are you insane?" he hissed, walking over to tower over me. "Do you have any idea how embarrassing that was? I had to use Celeste’s personal card to pay for our dinner because my platinum card was flagged for fraud! You humiliated me!"

"You engaged yourself to another woman in front of your entire company, Adrian," I replied, my voice steady, devoid of the tears I had cried in the car. "And you are worried about a declined credit card?"

He waved his hand dismissively. "That was business, Claire! You don't understand the corporate world. Celeste and I... it's a merger. A strategic partnership. Halcyon needs her family's backing to secure the European expansion. I was going to tell you. I was going to offer you a very generous settlement."

"A settlement? With whose money?"

"With my money!" he snapped. "The money I made building Halcyon!"

I let out a soft, dry laugh. It was the first time I realized how deeply he had bought into his own lie. He truly believed he was the genius behind the empire.

"You really didn't read the contracts, did you?" I murmured.

His phone began to vibrate violently in his hand. At the same second, his iPad on the kitchen counter started chiming.

Adrian frowned, looking down at his screen. The caller ID showed Celeste.

He answered it quickly, his tone instantly shifting to a polished, professional register. "Celeste, darling, I'm dealing with Claire right now—"

He froze.

Even from across the room, I could hear Celeste’s voice leaking from the receiver. She wasn't speaking in her usual calm, aristocratic tone. She was screaming.

"What do you mean, the assets are locked?" Adrian stammered, his face turning from flushed red to a ghostly, sickly grey. "What do you mean, Northstar pulled out? Who is Northstar?"

He looked up at me. His eyes slowly traveled to my face, then to the tablet on the counter which was now flashing an urgent email notification from the Halcyon Board of Directors.

"Claire..." Adrian’s voice trembled. "What did you do?"

"I called Miriam," I said, standing up and smoothing my skirt. "I withdrew my eighty-three percent. Tomorrow morning, Halcyon Dynamics will be nothing but an empty shell with a massive debt leverage. Enjoy your engagement, Adrian. You just married a ghost."
