Chapter 8 - A New Dawn in Paris

Six months later, the autumn air in Paris was crisp and sweet.

I stood on the balcony of my hotel suite, looking out at the Eiffel Tower as it began to glow in the twilight. The city was beautiful, just as I had imagined it when I bought those two tickets half a year ago. But I wasn't alone, and I wasn't sad.

In my hand, I held a copy of The Wall Street Journal.

The front-page headline read: "VALE-NORTHSTAR INDUSTRIES LAUNCHES REVOLUTIONARY CLEAN ENERGY GRID IN EUROPE. CEO CELESTE VALE AND FOUNDER CLAIRE VANCE DECLARE A NEW ERA."

We had done it.

We had built an empire from the ruins of Halcyon. But this time, it was built on real technology, real capital, and mutual respect. Celeste had proven herself to be an invaluable partner, running the corporate operations with flawless precision while I managed the research and development, honoring my father’s legacy every single day.

A knock sounded at the door.

"Enter," I called out.

Celeste walked in, wearing an elegant black evening gown. She held two glasses of champagne. "The car is downstairs, Claire. The ministers are waiting. It’s time for the launch gala."

I turned around, smiling as I took one of the glasses. "I'm ready."

She looked at me, her eyes shining with admiration. "You look beautiful, Claire. Paris suits you."

"It does," I agreed, looking out at the glittering city. "I spent so many years waiting for someone else to take me here. I forgot that I had the keys to the plane the whole time."

We clinked our glasses together, the clear, sharp ring of crystal echoing in the quiet room.

I took a sip of the cold champagne, feeling the bubbles tickle my throat. I remembered the sound of that champagne bubble breaking in the lobby of Halcyon six months ago—the sound of my old life shattering.

Now, as I looked out at the lights of Paris, I knew that the floor hadn't just disappeared beneath my feet.

It had turned into the sky. And I was finally flying.
