Chapter 4 - The Trap Closes

Monday morning arrived with heavy rain lashing against the windows.

Daniel was up early, dressed in his tailored suit. I knew exactly why he was eager. At 9:00 AM, the financial clearing houses opened. The $800,000 transfer from my company would finalize, dropping into the shell corporation he had set up in Delaware.

“I have a big meeting this morning,” Daniel said, adjusting his tie in the mirror. “I might be unreachable until noon.”

“Good luck,” I said from the bed, watching him. “I’ll be working from home. I need to sort out Margaret’s care plan.”

“Don't stress yourself out, Evie. Sometimes nature just takes its course,” he said softly, a chilling double meaning hiding in his words. He kissed my cheek and left.

As soon as his car pulled out of the driveway, I threw off the covers and went straight to my multi-monitor setup in the home office. Nina was already on a secure video call.

“He’s logging in from his phone,” Nina announced. “He’s pinging the Delaware account.”

I watched the live data stream my team was intercepting. “Let him see the pending balance. Let him think it’s clearing.”

For the next two hours, I dismantled Daniel’s life.

With the forged documents and the audio recording as absolute proof of intent, Nina had secured a secret injunction from a federal judge over the weekend. We weren't just stopping the $800,000 transfer. We were tracing every penny he had stolen from Margaret over the last three months.

“Found it,” I whispered, my fingers flying across the keyboard. “He used Margaret’s stolen credit cards to buy cryptocurrency, then funneled it through a mixer to hide the origin. He’s been bleeding her dry for a year.”

“Lorraine is a co-signer on the Delaware shell company,” Nina added. “She’s fully implicated. Federal wire fraud, elder abuse, forgery, and conspiracy.”

At 10:15 AM, the trap snapped shut.

On his end, Daniel would see a notification: Transaction Frozen. Account Suspended Pending Investigation.

My phone buzzed. It was Daniel. I let it ring.

It buzzed again. And again. Panic was setting in.

I picked up on the fifth try. “Hello?”

“Evie!” Daniel’s voice was strained, breathless. “Listen, there’s an issue with the bank. Did you authorize a hold on the company accounts? Some fraud prevention nonsense?”

“Oh, yes,” I said, my voice dripping with innocent confusion. “The bank called me. They said someone forged my signature and tried to wire eight hundred thousand dollars to a shell company. Can you believe that? Thank God I caught it.”

Dead silence on the other end of the line.

“Daniel? Are you there?”

“I... I need to make some calls,” he stammered, hanging up abruptly.

I smiled. The financial web was completely sealed. He couldn't move a single cent. He had no money, no escape route, and he didn't even know the worst part yet.

It was time for the final act. I walked to the kitchen and called Lorraine.

“Lorraine? It’s Evelyn,” I said, forcing a hysterical sob into my voice. “Please, you have to come over right now. It’s Margaret. I... I went to wake her up, and she’s not breathing. I think she’s dead.”
