Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

“Police! Nobody move!”
Four uniformed officers flooded into the living room, followed closely by two plainclothes detectives and Nina Park, holding a thick briefcase.
Daniel stopped dead in his tracks, his hands raised instinctively. Lorraine let out a piercing shriek and collapsed onto an armchair.
“Daniel Hale and Lorraine Hale,” the lead detective said, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. “You are both under arrest for elder abuse, conspiracy to commit fraud, and attempted grand larceny.”
“This is insane!” Daniel shouted, his voice cracking with panic. “She’s lying! My wife is crazy! She’s the one who locked my grandmother in that room! Ask anyone! Check the neighborhood!”
“Save it,” the detective said, forcefully spinning Daniel around and clicking the cuffs onto his wrists. “We have the audio tapes. We’ve heard you and your mother plotting to frame your wife for murder.”
Daniel froze, turning his head to stare at me, his eyes wide with betrayal. “You tapped the house? You set me up?”
“No, Daniel,” I walked up to him, close enough that he could see the absolute disgust in my eyes. “You set yourself up. I just made sure you tripped over your own wire.”
Lorraine began to sob hysterically. “It was his idea! Daniel made me do it! I didn't want to hurt Margaret, I swear! He said we needed the money, he said Evelyn had too much control! I’ll testify against him!”
“Mom!” Daniel screamed, thrashing against the officers. “Shut up!”
“Oh, she’s singing already,” Nina said with a smirk, stepping beside me. “Just wait until she sees the federal charges for the wire fraud. Those carry a twenty-year maximum.”
As they dragged Daniel toward the door, he looked back at me, his arrogance finally giving way to genuine despair. “Evie, please... we’re married. We’re family.”
“We were never family,” I said coldly. “Take him out.”
Once the police cruisers pulled away, the house fell completely silent. The sour smell was still there, the echoes of the chaos still hanging in the air. I looked around the beautiful living room I had spent years decorating, realizing it had all been a stage for a horrific play.
Nina put a comforting hand on my shoulder. “You did flawlessly, Evie. The evidence is bulletproof. The DA says it’s an airtight case.”
“How is Margaret?” I asked, my voice finally shaking just a little bit as the adrenaline began to wear off.
“She’s awake. Dr. Evans says her system is flushing out the toxins. She wants to see you.”

I grabbed my coat. I had a lot of work to do to untangle the financial mess Daniel had created, and a divorce to file. But for the first time since I stepped off that plane, I felt like I could breathe.
I was leaving this house, and I was never coming back.
