Chapter 8 - Rebirth

It has been a year since that day at the airport. A lot can change in a year when you finally stop carrying dead weight. I never went back to being the quiet, baking housewife. I reclaimed my position at the head of Vance Holdings. I expanded the portfolio, doubled our philanthropic efforts, and moved into a penthouse in downtown Dallas. The view from my balcony is breathtaking. There are no glass floors. No secrets hidden underneath me.
I hear things about Jack from time to time. Dallas is a big city, but the medical community is small. He never got his private practice back. With his reputation in tatters, no major hospital would hire him. Last I heard, he was working overnight shifts at an urgent care clinic in a rundown suburb. He lives in a small apartment with his mother and sister. They spend their days arguing over grocery bills and blaming each other for the paradise they lost. They are trapped in a prison of their own making.

Sometimes, late at night, I think about that moment at Terminal C. The pain I felt when he kissed her. The utter devastation of realizing my ten years of love meant absolutely nothing to them. But the pain doesn't haunt me anymore. It saved me. If he hadn't lied about that emergency surgery. If I hadn't gone to the airport to surprise him with a forgotten travel pillow. I might have spent the rest of my life living an illusion.
I pour myself a glass of expensive bourbon. I walk out onto the balcony, feeling the warm Texas wind in my hair. My phone buzzes on the patio table. It's Gerald. Not with bad news, but with a new acquisition report. I smile. I am Megan Vance. I survived the fire. And I built an empire from the ashes. The city lights sparkle below me, endless and full of promise. For the first time in a decade, I am finally awake. And I have never felt more alive.
