Chapter 5 - The Burner Phone and the Ledger

By dawn, they were two hundred miles away, holed up in a rundown motel that accepted cash.

The faded floral wallpaper and humming mini-fridge felt like a luxury after the terror of the night.

Lily was fast asleep on the lumpy bed, exhausted from the escape.

Evelyn sat at the small laminate table, tracing her finger over the entries in Arthur’s ledger.

"I need to know everything," Mark said, handing her a stale coffee from the lobby.

"Vanessa hated me," Evelyn started, staring into the dark liquid. "We went to the same college. She was always jealous of my family's innovations."

"But to fake your death?" Mark asked, sitting across from her.

"My brake lines were cut," she explained calmly, though her hands shook. "When I woke up from the crash, I was in a private clinic. Arthur owned it."

Evelyn looked up, her eyes locking onto Mark's.

"They kept me sedated for months. By the time I was coherent, you were already married to her."

"I thought I was moving on," Mark whispered, guilt crushing his chest. "I thought Lily needed a mother."

"You did what you had to do to survive grief," Evelyn said gently. "But Vanessa didn't want you. She wanted the final signature on my estate."

She slid the ledger toward him, pointing to a highlighted account number.

"Arthur couldn't forge my signature to access the core trust," Evelyn explained. "He needed me alive. So Vanessa built the cell."

"We have to take this to the FBI," Mark said, touching the worn pages.

Before Evelyn could reply, a harsh buzzing sound startled them both.

It was a cheap burner phone, taped securely to the back cover of the ledger.

Mark stared at it, a cold dread washing over him.

Evelyn slowly reached out and pressed the green answer button, putting it on speaker.

"Did you really think running would save you, Evelyn?" Arthur Vance’s smooth, aristocratic voice purred from the speaker.
