Chapter 6 - THE REUNION IN THE SHADOWS: BRINGING ELENA BACK TO THE LIGHT
My breath caught in my throat. I lowered Sophia gently to the floor, though she immediately clung to my trouser leg, peering fearfully into the dark room.
“Elena?” I choked out, rushing across the room and dropping to my knees beside the mattress.
She turned her head slowly. Her skin was translucent, stretched tightly across her cheekbones like parchment paper. Her once-lustrous hair was matted and graying at the roots, and her eyes—deeply sunken and dull—stared blankly at the wall until they flickered toward my voice.
“Julian...?” Her voice was a dry, raspy whisper, barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator. “Did... did you find food for Sophia? I told her... I told her I wasn't hungry...”
Tears burned hot and fast down my cheeks, washing away any remaining shred of mercy I had left for my mother. I reached out, gathering my wife into my arms, feeling the sharp ridge of every single vertebra beneath her thin cotton shirt. She weighed next to nothing.
“You’re safe now, my love,” I sobbed, pressing my face into her hair. “It’s over. You’re coming out of here right now.”
Behind us, Victoria stood in the doorway, flanked by her lawyers, her expression frozen in cold defiance even now. “She signed the medical waiver months ago, Julian. Incompetency papers. Everything was legally transferred to me. You can’t touch a dime of the estate, and you can’t take her anywhere without my medical sign-off.”
“Medical sign-off?” a cold, sharp voice interrupted from the hallway.

Dr. Harrison, the family’s independent family physician whom I had secretly dispatched hours earlier when I first suspected something was wrong, stepped through the shattered doorway, flanked by two uniformed police officers. He shone a clinical penlight into the room, taking in the locked door, the bare mattress, and Elena’s emaciated condition with horror.
“This isn't medical care, Victoria,” Dr. Harrison said, his voice shaking with professional outrage. “This is systematic imprisonment and intentional starvation. I am revoking all of your medical proxy rights effective immediately.”
