Chapter 3 - The Shadows in the House

Two weeks earlier.

The doctor removed my breathing tube later that night, replacing it with a nasal cannula. As I drifted in and out of a medicated sleep, my mind kept dragging me back to the events that led to my near-death.

I had built my software company from the ground up in my early twenties. By thirty-five, I was a multi-millionaire.

Ryan was a charismatic marketing executive I met at a gala. I fell for his charm, his easy laugh, and the way he played with Ethan, who was just a toddler from my previous, brief marriage.

But over the last year, things had rotted from the inside out.

Money was vanishing from our joint accounts. Large, inexplicable withdrawals.

When I confronted Ryan, he blamed it on bad stock investments. He gaslit me, telling me I was working too much and letting my paranoia ruin our marriage.

Then, there was Claire.

Claire had always lived in my shadow. She dropped out of college, bounced from job to job, and ultimately moved into the guest house on our estate, living entirely on my charity.

I loved her. She was my sister. I thought I was helping her.

But two weeks before the crash, I came home early from a business trip.

The house was quiet. Too quiet. Ethan was at a sleepover.

I walked upstairs, intending to surprise Ryan. Instead, as I walked past his home office, I heard giggling.

The door was slightly ajar. I peered through the crack.

There was Ryan, sitting in his leather chair. And there was Claire, sitting on his lap.

“She’s so oblivious, Ry,” Claire was whispering, twisting his hair around her finger. “She literally just wired another fifty grand into my ‘startup’ fund. You should have seen her face. She thinks she’s my savior.”

“Let her think it,” Ryan chuckled, kissing her neck. “Once we get her to sign the irrevocable trust documents, the company is mine. And then, we don’t have to hide anymore.”

“What about the kid?” Claire asked, her voice laced with disgust.

“Ethan goes to boarding school in Switzerland. I’ve already looked into it. Out of sight, out of mind.”

I stood frozen in the hallway. The betrayal was so deep, so absolute, that I couldn't even breathe. My own husband. My own flesh and blood.

I didn't burst in. I didn't scream.

Screaming is what victims do. Screaming gives away your power.

Instead, I turned around, walked silently out of the house, and drove straight to Ms. Parker’s office.

“I want to change everything,” I had told my lawyer, sitting in her high-rise office overlooking the city. “I want Ryan removed from the company board. I want Claire evicted. And I want my entire estate put into a blind trust for Ethan, with you as the executor.”

“Emily, if we do this, it will trigger a war,” Ms. Parker warned me, adjusting her glasses.

“Let them declare war,” I said coldly. “I’ll leave them with nothing.”

But I had underestimated them. I underestimated how desperate greedy people become when they sense their golden goose is about to fly away.

Ryan must have found the draft papers I hid in my safe. He must have panicked.

He didn't want a divorce. A divorce meant a prenup, which meant he walked away with a tiny fraction of my wealth.

A widow, however? A grieving widow inherits the kingdom.

That night, as I drove through the pouring rain, tapping my brakes near the edge of the cliff, I finally understood the terrifying reality.

They hadn't just broken my heart. They had planned to end my life.

And as I lay in the hospital bed, listening to the monitor beep, I made a silent vow.

Surviving the crash was only step one. Now, I was going to ruin them.
