Chapter 6 - The Final Trap

The voices from the foyer grew loud immediately.

I pushed myself out of bed. I didn't need the wheelchair anymore. My legs were bruised and weak, but rage was a phenomenal painkiller. I grabbed a silver walking cane and slowly made my way down the hall toward the living room.

“You have no right to be here!” Claire was screeching.

I turned the corner and saw Ms. Parker standing in the center of the living room, flanked by Detective Miller and two uniformed officers.

Ethan was standing behind Ms. Parker, clutching her hand. When he saw me, his face lit up.

“Mom!” he yelled, trying to run to me.

“Stay there, Ethan,” Ms. Parker said gently, holding him back. “Let your mother handle this.”

Ryan was red in the face, his fists clenched. “Get out of my house! Emily is resting, and you are trespassing!”

I stepped fully into the light of the living room. I stood tall, leaning slightly on the cane, dropping the fragile invalid act entirely.

“It’s my house, Ryan,” I said, my voice ringing out clear, steady, and loud.

Ryan froze. He looked at me, taking in my posture, the steel in my eyes, the lack of confusion on my face. The realization began to dawn on him, creeping across his features like a shadow.

“Emily… what are you doing out of bed?” he stammered.

“I’m done resting,” I replied, walking slowly toward the center of the room. I looked at Claire, who was still wearing my robe. “Take off my robe, Claire. You look ridiculous.”

Claire’s mouth opened and closed like a fish. “Em… I thought… your amnesia…”

“Amnesia?” I let out a sharp, cold laugh. “Did you really think I forgot? Did you really think I didn’t hear you whispering in the hospital room about taking my son out of the country? About pulling the plug on my 'empty body'?”

Ryan stepped back, holding his hands up defensively. “Emily, you’re confused. The brain injury—”

“Stop talking,” I snapped, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. “I know everything. I know about you and Claire. I heard you two in the office two weeks ago. That’s why I went to Ms. Parker to write you completely out of my will.”

Claire gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

“And I know,” I continued, taking another step toward my husband, “that when you realized you were getting cut off, you paid a mechanic fifty thousand dollars to cut the brake lines on my SUV.”

“You’re crazy!” Ryan yelled, his panic turning into a vicious, cornered anger. “You have no proof! None of that is true! It’s her word against ours, Detective!”

Detective Miller pulled a small device from his pocket and pressed a button.

The audio from last night, recorded by the hidden microphones, played loud and clear through the living room.

“The mechanic is getting antsy… He says the cops visited his shop asking about wire snips.” “Did you pay him off?” “I gave him fifty grand from Emily’s secondary account… He knows he has us by the throat.”

The recording stopped.

The silence that followed was absolute. It was the sound of two lives completely unraveling.

Claire collapsed onto the white leather sofa, sobbing hysterically. “It was his idea! It was Ryan’s idea! He told me we would be rich! He manipulated me!”

“Shut your mouth, you stupid bitch!” Ryan roared, turning on her.

“A perfect defense strategy,” Ms. Parker said dryly. “Turn on each other immediately.”
