Chapter 5 - The Final Trap

“Well, well, a touching family reunion,” Ashley mocked, walking slowly toward us as her heels clicked sharply against the pavement.
I stepped in front of Emily, shielding her and my sons. “Get the hell out of here, Ashley,” I growled, my fists clenched at my sides. “I know everything. I have the files, the videos, the hospital records. It’s over.”
Ashley threw her head back and let out a terrible, metallic laugh. “Oh, Michael. Sweet, naive Michael. Do you really think I didn't know you hired that cheap private eye?” She snapped her fingers, and one of the lawyers stepped forward to hand her a thick manila folder. “You see, when you run a multi-million dollar real estate empire, you sign a lot of papers. Contracts, acquisitions, legal waivers. And you trust me to organize them for you.”
She pulled a document from the folder and held it up like a trophy. “Three months ago, while you were rushing to close that deal in Miami, you signed a very special document: an irrevocable Power of Attorney, granting me full control of your personal estate, your medical decisions, and, most importantly... your legal guardianship rights.”
She turned her venomous gaze toward Emily. “And yesterday, using that power, I filed an emergency injunction. My legal team petitioned the family court with evidence of Ms. Emily Carter’s homelessness, lack of income, and alleged criminal history of theft.”
“You planted that necklace!” I screamed.
“Prove it in court,” Ashley taunted. “It will take years. By then, the state will have taken these children. And as your legal proxy, I have arranged for them to be placed in a private facility until I decide they are fit for adoption. Far, far away from this trash.”

Emily gasped, a heartbreaking sound of pure terror, clutching the babies so tight they began to cry. Ashley didn't want the babies; she just wanted to punish Emily and control me entirely.
“I am protected,” Ashley corrected, her eyes gleaming with malice. “I have the money, I have the signature, and I have the police on their way right now to execute the family court order. They are taking those babies today, Michael. And there is nothing you can do about it.” Sirens began to wail in the distance. The trap had sprung, and she thought she had cornered us perfectly.
