Chapter 2 - The Ghost of an Inheritance Never Received

Arthur Bennett slumped heavily into one of the dining chairs, staring blankly at the polished wood table. The name "Bennett Family Trust" hung in the air like a physical weight, instantly stripping away the indignant defiance from Patricia’s face. For a fraction of a second, panic flickered in Patricia’s eyes before she aggressively masked it with fury.

“Your grandmother left that money with conditions!” Patricia lied instantly, her voice rising in defensive pitch. “It wasn't liquid! It was tied up in land, taxes, and legal fees! We couldn't just cash it out!”

“Really?” Emily stepped closer, pulling a crisp, heavily stamped legal document from the thick manila folder. “Because according to Attorney Harrison—whom I spoke with on December 30th after my flight landed—the trust was completely unencumbered. It was liquidated in full fourteen years ago. Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, deposited directly into a joint account bearing your name and Dad’s. Exactly one year after Dad’s injury at the steel mill.”

The silence that followed was suffocating. Arthur turned his head slowly toward his wife. “Patty? What is she talking about? What two hundred and fifty thousand dollars?”

Patricia scoffed, waving a dismissive hand in the air. “We used it for living expenses, Arthur! What did you expect us to do? Starve? Lose everything? You couldn’t work for three years!”

“You used it to buy a vacation cabin in the Poconos under Aunt Sandra’s name, and you used the rest to fund your country club membership for six consecutive years,” Emily stated, her voice dropping an octave. “While I was eating instant ramen in a studio apartment in Boston, working seventy hours a week as a paralegal, drowning in my own debt because I believed my family was starving. You didn't just take my money, Mom. You lied to me about your survival to secure your luxury.”

Aunt Sandra gasped, clutching her pearls. “Now hold on a minute, Emily! Don't drag me into this! I didn't know anything about a cabin!”

“Your name is on the deed, Aunt Sandra,” Emily replied smoothly, pulling out a property record. “Property tax statements go to your primary address in Erie. You’ve been holding the asset for them to avoid capital gains taxes.”
