Chapter 9 - The Social Media Smear Campaign

True to form, Patricia Bennett refused to go quietly into the night. When she realized that Arthur was actually talking to Emily about separation and that no rescue check was coming from Boston, her desperation curdled into venomous public retaliation.

On a Saturday afternoon in late January, Emily received a frantic text from her college roommate, Chloe, attaching a public Facebook post shared in the massive community group “Greater Pittsburgh Neighbors & Families.”

The author of the post was Patricia Bennett.

“Please share!!” Patricia’s public post began, accompanied by a heavily filtered family photo of Emily smiling during a past holiday visit. “My only daughter, Emily Bennett, a high-earning corporate lawyer in Boston, has completely abandoned her elderly, disabled parents in our time of dire medical need. After sacrificing everything to put her through elite schools, we are now facing homelessness and starvation while she vacations in luxury and blocks our calls. If you know her, please remind her that family is everything and honor thy father and mother.”

Within two hours, the post had garnered over three hundred shares and dozens of outrage-fueled comments condemning Emily as a heartless, ungrateful monster who deserved divine karma.

Emily stared at the screen, her pulse spiking for a brief moment. A younger version of herself would have panicked, called her mother in tears, and wired money just to shut down the public shaming. But the woman sitting in her Boston condo in 2026 was a senior legal operations manager who understood public relations, digital footprints, and defamation law.

She didn't call Patricia. Instead, she opened a clean document on her laptop and began drafting a public response.

She didn't post an emotional rant. She didn't scream or curse. She simply posted the cold, hard receipts.
