Chapter 10 - The Colonel's New Empire

One year later.
The sun was shining brightly over the newly renovated Carter Ridge estate.
I stood on the back porch, holding a steaming cup of coffee, breathing in the fresh morning air.
Aunt Margaret's old property had been transformed.
I didn't keep the suburban house where my trauma happened.
Instead, I had Mr. Sterling bulldoze it and donate the land to build a beautiful park for military veterans and their families.
Mark and Linda had faded into obscurity, living in a cramped, cheap rental on the other side of the state. Mark was working double shifts at a warehouse just to pay his court-mandated child support.
I, on the other hand, had flourished.
I received a promotion and was now stationed at the Pentagon, managing a massive national logistics division.
But my favorite job was being a mother.
Tyler, now four, was running across the massive backyard of our new home, laughing loudly as he chased our golden retriever.
Baby Margaret, just walking now, was babbling happily in her playpen on the porch.
I set down my coffee and picked up my daughter, pressing a kiss to her soft cheek.
“Look at your brother,” I whispered to her. “He’s so fast.”
She giggled, reaching for my shiny silver rank insignia pinned to my collar.
I thought back to that terrible day when I stood in the cold, humiliated and heartbroken.
They thought I was weak because I was pregnant.
They thought I was helpless because I loved them.
They mistook my kindness for fragility.
But a soldier is never broken by a lost battle.
A soldier learns, regroups, and wins the war.
Aunt Margaret gave me the weapons, but I was the one who fired the shots.
The phone in my pocket buzzed.
It was General Hayes.
“Good morning, Emily,” his gruff, warm voice came through.
“We need you in the briefing room at 0800. Big project coming down the pipeline.”
“Understood, sir,” I replied, standing tall. “I’ll be there.”
I hung up the phone and looked out over my beautiful, peaceful property.
No more lies. No more betrayal.
Just me, my children, and the incredible future we were going to build.

I smiled, picked up my keys, and walked out the door.
The Colonel had a world to conquer.
