Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Showdown

Two months later, the dust had settled, and the battle lines were drawn in a county courtroom.
I sat at the plaintiff's table, wearing my pristine Army dress uniform.
The medals on my chest gleamed in the fluorescent light.
I sat tall, confident, and perfectly composed.
On the other side of the room sat Mark.
He looked terrible.
He had lost weight, his suit was wrinkled, and he kept rubbing his bloodshot eyes.
Next to him sat a cheap, desperate-looking lawyer he had scraped together.
The judge, an older woman with a stern face, banged her gavel.
“We are here to finalize the divorce settlement between Emily Carter and Mark Carter. Mr. Carter’s counsel, you have the floor.”
Mark’s lawyer stood up, puffing out his chest.
“Your Honor, my client is entitled to fifty percent of all marital assets. This includes the massive inheritance Mrs. Carter recently received.”
I didn't blink. Mr. Sterling, sitting beside me, simply smirked.
“Furthermore,” Mark’s lawyer continued, “my client demands alimony, as he is currently unemployed, and Mrs. Carter is a high-earning military officer and heiress.”
The audacity of the man was almost impressive.
The judge turned to us. “Counsel for the plaintiff?”
Mr. Sterling stood up slowly, opening his thick leather briefcase.
“Your Honor, opposing counsel is severely misinformed regarding the law, the trust, and the timeline of events.”
He handed a thick stack of verified documents to the bailiff, who passed them to the judge.
“First, the Margaret Carter Trust was established before the marriage and strictly explicitly excludes any spouses from beneficiary rights. It is ironclad.”
The judge reviewed the documents and nodded. “Agreed. The trust is non-marital property. Move on.”
Mark’s face dropped.
“Second,” Mr. Sterling continued, his voice sharp like a blade.
“Mr. Carter committed adultery, abandoning his pregnant wife. We have date-stamped hotel receipts, text messages, and a sworn affidavit from his former employer.”
I watched Linda, who was sitting in the gallery, sink lower into her seat.
“Third, Mr. Carter has not paid a single dime in child support for his son, Tyler, since the separation. He is legally broke, jobless, and frankly, a liability to his children.”
The courtroom was dead silent.
The judge looked down at Mark with absolute disgust.
“Mr. Carter, your request for alimony is denied. Your claim to the inheritance is denied.”
She struck the gavel.
“Full physical and legal custody of both children is awarded to Colonel Carter. Mr. Carter is ordered to pay child support based on his future earning potential.”
Mark buried his face in his hands.
May you like
He had walked into the courtroom hoping for a payday.
He walked out with absolutely nothing but debt and disgrace.
