Chapter 4 - The Blood Test and the Whispering Walls

Midnight descended upon the sprawling Moretti estate like a velvet shroud, plunging the manicured gardens and looming stone towers into profound darkness.

Inside the private medical wing located in the basement level of the mansion, the hum of diagnostic equipment provided the only soundtrack to the tense atmosphere.

Nico stood beside a stainless-steel examination table, watching a trusted private physician transfer a tiny droplet of Claire’s blood—extracted earlier under tight security—into a high-speed genetic sequencer.

The results would take precisely forty-five minutes to process, but in a world where assassinations were scheduled like morning meetings, forty-five minutes felt like a lifetime.

“Are you certain no one else accessed the lab tonight, Doctor?” Nico asked, his dark eyes reflecting the cold blue glow of the computer monitor.

“Absolute certainty, Boss,” the older physician replied, his hands steady as he adjusted the microscope lenses.

“The biometric scanner at the entrance only recognizes my thumbprint and yours.”

“Good,” Nico muttered, turning his attention to the security monitors mounted on the far wall.

Camera feed four showed the hallway outside Claire’s guest suite on the third floor.

For the past twenty minutes, the feed had been flickering intermittently—a classic sign of localized electronic jamming.

Someone was trying to blind the security system on the third floor.

Nico didn’t hesitate; he drew the silenced semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster, checked the chamber with a practiced click, and strode out of the medical lab into the subterranean corridors.

Meanwhile, upstairs in the guest suite, Claire sat cross-legged on the plush Persian rug, clutching the silver ivy-leaf pendant tightly in her palm.

The rhythmic pacing of the guards outside had suddenly stopped.

In its place came a strange, unnatural silence that felt far more menacing than any noise.

Claire held her breath, pressing her ear gently against the heavy oak door.

A faint hiss of pressurized gas echoed through the hallway keyhole.

Before she could process what was happening, a sweet, chemical scent began seeping under the door gap, curling into the room like a creeping fog.

Sleeping gas.

Panic surged through her veins, but years of surviving on the rough streets of the city kicked her instincts into high gear.

She scrambled backward, grabbed a damp hand towel from the adjoining bathroom, soaked it thoroughly under the sink faucet, and pressed it firmly across her nose and mouth.

She dragged the heavy mahogany dresser toward the door, shoving it against the barrier just as the heavy brass handle began to turn from the outside with brutal persistence.

A muffled voice cursed through the wood, followed by the heavy thud of a shoulder slamming against the door panels.

The lock rattled violently, the screws groaning under the immense pressure of someone attempting to force entry into the room.

Claire backed away toward the tall French windows leading to the exterior balcony, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped drum.

She twisted the window latch, pushed the glass open, and stepped out into the freezing autumn air just as the bedroom door gave way with a resounding crash.

Through the crack in the dressing screen, she saw a figure clad entirely in black tactical gear step into the room, holding a suppressed firearm aimed directly at the empty bed.

Claire pressed her back against the cold stone balcony railing, shivering violently as the wind whipped her hair across her face.

She was three stories high, with no way down except the sheer drop into the rose gardens below.

Before the intruder could turn toward the balcony doors, a heavy shadow lunged from the adjacent hallway entrance with terrifying speed.

Nico Moretti tackled the tactical operative against the bedroom wall, the force of the impact shattering a decorative ceramic vase into a thousand pieces.

A muffled gunshot echoed through the suite, a stray bullet embedding itself harmlessly into the ceiling plaster.

Nico delivered a vicious right hook that sent the intruder crashing to the floor, followed swiftly by a knee pressed hard against the man's throat until the assassin went completely limp.

Standing over the unconscious body, Nico straightened his jacket, wiped a smudge of dust from his sleeve, and slowly turned his gaze toward the balcony doors.

May you like

He saw Claire standing in the freezing wind, shivering in her thin maid's uniform, holding the silver pendant against her chest like a shield.

Nico walked out onto the balcony, his expression a mask of cold fury, and extended a gloved hand toward her without saying a word.
