Chapter 5 - The Bloodline and the Bloodbath

The private study on the ground floor had been transformed into an impromptu interrogation and command center before sunrise.

The unconscious assassin—stripped of his tactical gear and zip-tied securely to a heavy metal chair—sat slumped in the center of the Persian rug, bleeding sluggishly from a split lip.

Anthony Moretti sat behind his desk, holding a printed medical dossier bearing the official genetic sequencing results from the subterranean lab.

The numbers didn't lie.

A ninety-nine point nine-nine percent DNA match between Claire Morgan and Elena Moretti.

The granddaughter was real, she was breathing, and she was standing right in front of them.

Claire sat in a leather armchair near the fireplace, wrapped in a thick woolen blanket provided by the head housekeeper, sipping hot black coffee while trying to process the sheer scale of the violence surrounding her.

Nico stood leaning against the marble mantelpiece, his eyes fixed coldly on Marcus Vance, who had been summoned to the study under the guise of an urgent legal emergency.

Marcus stepped through the double doors wearing an immaculate charcoal suit, his silver hair neatly combed, maintaining his usual polite, corporate smile until he saw the bound assassin tied up in the middle of the room.

The smile vanished instantly from Marcus’s face like breath off a cold windowpane.

“What is the meaning of this, Anthony?” Marcus asked, his voice carrying a carefully calibrated tone of righteous indignation as he glanced between the patriarch and the bound intruder.

“Why is there a mercenary tied up in your private study?”

“Drop the act, Marcus,” Nico said quietly, pushing off the mantelpiece and walking slowly toward the legal advisor.

“We know about the audit reports from twenty-six years ago.”

“We know about the tampered brake lines on Elena’s car.”

“And most importantly, we know who authorized last night’s security override on the third-floor west wing.”

Marcus’s eyes flickered toward Claire for a fraction of a second, revealing a sudden, desperate flash of calculation.

He adjusted his tie, his posture remaining remarkably composed for a man cornered by the head of the Moretti syndicate.

“You are letting grief cloud your judgment, Nico,” Marcus replied smoothly, spreading his hands in a gesture of absolute innocence.

“I have served this family loyally for over thirty years.”

“I consolidated the shipping assets to protect the syndicate during the federal RICO investigations, not to steal them.”

“As for the girl—whoever she claims to be—she is nothing more than an opportunistic impostor planted by a rival syndicate to destabilize your succession.”

“Is that right?” Anthony spoke for the first time, his voice like grinding stones.

He stood up slowly from his desk, holding the genetic dossier in one trembling hand and a heavy brass paperweight in the other.

“Then how do you explain the fact that Marcus Vance is the only person outside of my immediate bloodline who knew about the private medical vault where Elena’s genetic profile was archived in ninety-nine?”

Marcus took a half-step backward toward the door, his hand dipping casually toward the side pocket of his tailored jacket where a concealed Walther PPK pistol rested against his thigh.

“You’re losing your mind, old man,” Marcus sneered, his mask of polite loyalty finally cracking into a mask of pure malice.

“The Moretti empire was rotting from the top down long before Elena decided to run away with her little rebel boyfriend.”

“I didn’t just stage her accident; I made sure her bloodline would never return to claim a single penny of what I built for this family.”

Before Marcus’s fingers could wrap around the grip of his hidden weapon, Nico moved with the blinding speed of a striking cobra.

In one fluid motion, Nico crossed the room, grabbed Marcus by the collar of his suit jacket, and slammed him against the mahogany bookshelf with enough force to rattle the antique leather-bound volumes.

Marcus choked for air as Nico’s forearm pressed mercilessly against his windpipe, the syndicate boss’s dark eyes burning with lethal intent.

“You made one fatal mistake, Marcus,” Nico whispered directly into the terrified legal advisor’s ear.

“You forgot that blood always finds its way home.”

Anthony walked slowly around the desk, stopping inches away from the cornered traitor, his ancient eyes filled with a lifetime of unforgiving vengeance.

“Lock him in the lower vault,” Anthony commanded quietly, his gaze never leaving Marcus’s terrified face.

“And then prepare a public press release for the board of directors.”

“Announce the return of Elena Moretti’s legal heir.”

Claire watched the scene unfold from her armchair, clutching the silver ivy-leaf pendant against her chest as the heavy weight of her true identity finally settled over her shoulders.

She was no longer the invisible maid hiding from the world.

She was a Moretti, and the shadows of the city would never look at her the same way again.CHAPTER 6 — The Boardroom Coup and the Phantom Shareholder

The heavy iron gates of the lower vault slammed shut with a finality that echoed through the stone foundations of the Moretti estate.

Marcus Vance was locked away behind three layers of reinforced steel, stripped of his phones, his legal immunity, and his illusions of control.

Upstairs in the executive boardroom, however, the digital fallout of his arrest was already tearing through the financial arteries of the syndicate.

Computer screens across the trading floor flickered red as millions of shares in Moretti Logistics began dumping onto the open market simultaneously.

Nico stood at the head of the long glass table, his knuckles pressed white against the polished wood as he watched the stock value plummet.

“It’s an automated failsafe,” Nico said, his voice cold and devoid of panic.

“Marcus didn’t just manage our accounts; he programmed an emergency liquidation protocol that activates the moment his biometric signature is disconnected from the main server.”

Claire sat quietly in a high-backed leather chair beside Anthony, wearing a sharply tailored charcoal blazer that Nico had ordered delivered to her suite.

She looked less like a maid now and more like a woman standing on the edge of a precipice, staring into a storm she never asked to join.

“Who wrote the code for that protocol?” Claire asked, her voice calm despite the roaring chaos surrounding them.

Nico turned his dark gaze toward her, a spark of professional respect flashing briefly in his eyes.

“Only someone with executive-level access to the internal network,” Nico answered.

“Someone who sits at this very table during quarterly meetings.”

Before Anthony could respond, the heavy mahogany double doors swung open without warning.

Richard Hale—Vanessa’s father and the primary stakeholder in the city’s shipping ports—strode into the boardroom with an air of arrogant confidence.

He didn’t look like a guest visiting an ally; he looked like a conqueror claiming the spoils of war.

“I heard rumors that your legal advisor was hauled off to the basement like a common criminal, Anthony,” Richard announced, his voice booming across the silent room.

“And worse, I heard you’re letting a penniless kitchen maid sit in on emergency financial briefings.”

Anthony did not flinch, his ancient eyes narrowing into dangerous slits as he looked at the man who had been a business partner for over two decades.

“Watch your tongue, Richard,” Anthony warned softly.

“You are speaking to the legal heir of the Moretti empire.”

Richard let out a harsh, mocking laugh that grated against the tense atmosphere of the boardroom.

“An heir who appeared out of thin air wearing a cheap trinket purchased at a flea market?” Richard scoffed, stepping closer to the table.

“The board of directors will never accept a servant girl as a legitimate successor.”

“And according to the corporate bylaws, if the primary bloodline cannot prove its financial solvency within forty-eight hours, controlling shares default to the largest secondary partner.”

Which happened to be Richard Hale himself.

The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with terrifying clarity in Claire’s mind.
