Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Hallway

Ethan’s jaw worked silently for a moment, his eyes darting frantically between me and Megan, who was recording the entire exchange on her phone with the lens pointed squarely at his panicked face. "What... what are you talking about?" Ethan stammered, his voice pitching an octave higher than usual. "Chloe Vance? Penthouse? Claire, you've clearly lost your mind. You must have caught some kind of delirium with that fever. Look, let's just go home. We can talk about this in the car." He reached out, his manicured fingers closing around my wrist with a tight, proprietary grip that used to make me feel protected, but now felt like shackles. I didn't flinch. I didn't pull away. I simply looked down at his hand, then back up into his wide, terrified eyes. "Don't touch me, Ethan," I said, my voice dangerously quiet. He recoiled as if my skin had burned him. "You left me at the dock with a 102-degree fever, four percent phone battery, and two heavy suitcases while you had a pale blue cashmere scarf on your passenger seat and a pregnant twenty-four-year-old waiting for you across the lake. And now you're standing in my best friend's doorway pretending you've been 'worried sick' for twelve days?" "I didn't—that's insane—who told you—" Ethan stuttered, completely losing his composure, his corporate veneer dissolving into a puddle of sweaty desperation. "Nobody had to tell me anything, Ethan," I said, stepping forward so that we were mere inches apart. I could smell his expensive sandalwood cologne—the same cologne I had bought him for our anniversary last year—and it sickened me. "When you abandon your forensic accountant wife on New Year's Eve, you really shouldn't leave your encrypted laptop synced to the home Wi-Fi network where your browser history automatically syncs our iCloud drive." A collective gasp seemed to echo in Ethan's throat. His eyes widened to the size of saucers. "You... you accessed my—" "Your shadow merchant account? Your LLC lease agreements? Your text threads with Arthur Vance discussing how to dump me with zero alimony before the quarterly audit closes? Oh, yes, Ethan. I accessed all of it." Megan smirked, tapping the screen of her phone. "And just so you know, counselor, every single byte of data regarding E.C. Enterprise Solutions, the $430,000 in diverted client retainers, and the fraudulent asset transfers has already been packaged, notarized, and forwarded directly to Senior Partner Arthur Vance, the Washington State Bar Association, and the King County Prosecutor's Financial Crimes Division." Ethan staggered backward, his shoulder slamming hard against the wallpapered hallway wall. "You... you didn't." "Try me," I whispered coldly. "You thought leaving me in the freezing cold was going to get rid of me quietly, Ethan. Instead, you gave me twelve uninterrupted days to dismantle your entire life piece by piece. Now, get out of this building before I call building security and have you physically thrown out." Ethan stood there for another second, his chest heaving, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He realized he had lost. The game was over. Without another word, he turned on his heel, bolted down the hallway toward the elevators, and punched the call button with a frantic, trembling fist as the doors slid open.
