Chapter 6 - The Midnight Visit and the Ultimate Bluff

At 11:45 PM—exactly twelve days and one hour after he had abandoned me at the ferry dock—my phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. It wasn't a call. It was a text from an unknown burner number. “Claire, please. Just meet me at the Starbucks on Queen Anne Avenue. Ten minutes. We need to talk before you ruin both of our lives permanently. I have the divorce papers ready. We can settle this like adults.” I looked at Megan, who was curled up on the sofa reading a legal brief. "He wants to meet." Megan looked up, her eyes narrowing. "It's midnight, Claire. Absolutely not. He's desperate, angry, and cornered. A cornered animal bites." "That's why I'm going," I said calmly, zipping up my black leather jacket. "Because a cornered animal is finally ready to sign whatever I put in front of him." "I'm coming with you," Megan insisted, standing up immediately. "You can sit at the corner table by the window. I'll be parked in my Jeep right outside with the engine running and my dash-cam recording every second of the entrance." Five minutes later, I pushed open the glass door of the quiet, brightly lit coffee shop on Queen Anne Avenue. Ethan was sitting in the corner booth near the back. He looked utterly destroyed. His tie was gone, his collar was unbuttoned, his hair was disheveled, and dark, purple shadows bruised the skin beneath his eyes. He looked ten years older than the man who had driven away in his gray BMW twelve nights ago. As I slid into the vinyl booth opposite him, he didn't look up immediately. His hands were clasped tightly together on the scarred wooden table, trembling slightly. "You ruined everything," he whispered hoarsely, his voice devoid of its usual arrogant polish. "I gave you seven years of my life, Claire. I supported your career. I let you travel. And you destroyed my entire professional existence in forty-eight hours." I leaned back against the cushion, folding my arms across my chest. "You built a house of cards out of stolen money, lies, and cruelty, Ethan. You did this to yourself the moment you decided to treat me like an obstacle to be discarded." He finally raised his head. His eyes were bloodshot and desperate. "I was trapped, Claire. Chloe... she's young, she didn't understand the pressure I was under—and she's pregnant, Claire. She's carrying my child. I had to secure a future for them." Hearing those words out loud didn't hurt. It didn't break my heart. It just confirmed every suspicion I had harbored since I first saw that pale blue cashmere scarf on his passenger seat. "Congratulations, Ethan," I said smoothly, my voice as cold as the Puget Sound wind. "You get your young mistress, your luxury penthouse, and your impending bankruptcy trial all in one neat little package. Now, where are the papers?" Ethan slid a thick manila folder across the table. "I signed a full relinquishment of any claim to your personal inheritance, your separate bank accounts, and your retirement fund. In exchange... you drop the criminal referral with the State Bar and the King County prosecutor. We file an uncontested dissolution based on irreconcilable differences, and we walk away clean." I opened the folder, flipped through the pages, and carefully examined every clause. He had surrendered everything—our house, our joint savings, his own equity stake, and every single dime of the $430,000 he had tried to steal. He was terrified of prison more than anything else. I pulled a silver pen from my pocket, uncapped it, and signed my name at the bottom of the settlement agreement with steady, deliberate strokes. Then I slid the folder back across the table. "It's done, Ethan," I said, standing up and buttoning my jacket. "You are free. Exactly like you wanted on New Year's Eve."
