Chapter 1 - The Lie at the Airport

The last words my thirteen-year-old son said to me before disappearing behind airport security were not goodbye.

They were a promise.

He wrapped his arms tightly around me at Dulles International Airport, pressing his face against my shoulder while my former husband stood several feet away.

Harrison was casually scrolling through his phone with the confidence of someone who believed he had already won.

To anyone watching, it looked like a heartbreaking goodbye between a mother and a son who had chosen another life.

But I felt something else.

As Tyler held me, his hand quietly slipped into the pocket of my coat.

“Don’t cry, Mom.”

“Just wait for me.”

Then he stepped away.

He followed Harrison toward the departure gate without looking back.

I stood behind the security barrier until they disappeared into the crowd, forcing myself to remain calm even though every part of me wanted to run after him.

It wasn't until I was sitting alone in the taxi that I reached into my coat pocket and found what he had left behind.

A heavy, matte black bank card.

No name. No logo. No explanation.

Before I could even understand why my son had given me something so unusual, my phone buzzed with an encrypted message from an unknown number.

There’s $3.8 million in the account.

The PIN is your birthday.

Don’t trust anyone Dad knows.

I’ll explain when I can.

I stared at the screen until the words became blurry.

Because only seven days earlier, Tyler had stood inside a Fairfax County courtroom and said the sentence that shattered me.

“My mom can’t give me the future I need.”

He had stood beside Harrison. He had looked older than thirteen. And when the judge asked where he wanted to live, he chose his father.

I thought my son had abandoned me.

I thought I had lost the person I had spent thirteen years protecting from Harrison’s toxic, shadowy world of corporate takeovers.

But holding that mysterious card in my hand, I began questioning everything.

"Driver," I said, my voice trembling but suddenly finding its strength. "Take me to the nearest private banking ATM. Now."

I needed to know if this was a sick joke, or if my teenage son had just committed the greatest heist of his life.

The ATM screen blinked back at me in the dim light of the bank's vestibule.

I typed in my birthday.

Processing...

The screen flashed.

Available Balance: $3,842,910.00.

My knees buckled.

Tyler hadn't chosen Harrison because he wanted a billionaire lifestyle.

He chose Harrison because he was planning to destroy him from the inside. And I had to find out why.
