Chapter 1 - The Answer That Stopped Time

“You’re too handsome to be alone,” my six-year-old daughter announced in the middle of the executive hallway, staring straight at the coldest billionaire in Manhattan.

“I think you should be my daddy.”

Every person around us froze, while I stood there absolutely certain my career had just ended.

For one horrifying second, nobody moved.

Then Adrian Kane—the man who could silence seasoned executives with a single glance—laughed.

Not a restrained smile or a polite chuckle.

A real, deep, helpless laugh.

That morning had already begun like a disaster.

My nanny called before six because a pipe had burst in her apartment building in Queens, my mother was stranded in Atlanta, and my best friend was stuck in Denver.

There was no one left to watch Mia.

Calling out wasn’t an option either.

At thirty-three, I was a senior creative director at Blackwell & Reed, one of Manhattan’s most demanding luxury branding firms, and that afternoon we were presenting revised campaign concepts to the board.

My boss, Adrian Kane, did not tolerate excuses.

At thirty-six, Adrian was heir to Kane Global Holdings and the billionaire who had transformed our company into an industry powerhouse.

He was brilliant, controlled, intimidating—and so ridiculously handsome that noticing it felt professionally irresponsible.

Tall, dark-haired, sharp-featured, with gray-blue eyes that seemed to catch every mistake, he rarely smiled.

During my two years working under him, our conversations had always been efficient, professional, and colder than winter marble.

So naturally, I had to bring my child to work that day.

“You’re going to be invisible,” I told Mia while she ate cereal on our kitchen counter. “Like a ghost. A very quiet ghost.”

“Can ghosts have crackers?”

“Yes.”

“Can ghosts watch cartoons?”

“With headphones.”

She tilted her head. “Can ghosts ask your mean boss why he always looks angry?”

“Absolutely not.”

She smiled into her cereal.

By 8:35, we were inside our Park Avenue office tower.

I settled Mia in the corner of my office with coloring books, an iPad, Goldfish crackers, two juice boxes, and Gerald, her stuffed elephant.

For over an hour, she was perfect.

Then my assistant appeared in my doorway.

“Board prep got moved. Mr. Kane wants every department head in Conference Room A in ten minutes.”

I crouched beside Mia.

“Stay here. No wandering. No looking for me. No adventures.”

She nodded seriously. “What if adventure finds me?”

“It won’t.”

The meeting lasted eighteen minutes.

By minute eleven, some strange maternal instinct was already warning me.

By minute sixteen, I knew.

My child was no longer in my office.

The second the meeting ended, I rushed into the hallway.

Then I heard something I had never heard before.

Adrian Kane laughing.

The sound came from the executive wing, warm and completely unguarded.

I rounded the corner and nearly stopped breathing.

Mia was standing directly in front of him.

Adrian was crouched to her height outside his private office, one hand over his mouth as he tried to stop laughing.

Then Mia pointed at him.

“You’re very handsome,” she said again. “And tall. I like tall. So you should be my daddy.”

I wanted the building to collapse on top of me.

“Mia!”

She turned happily.

“Hi, Mommy. I found a friend.”

“What did I tell you about leaving my office?”

Before she could answer, Adrian slowly stood.

His expression changed.

Those piercing gray-blue eyes moved from Mia to me, and suddenly the entire hallway went silent again.

Then he looked down at my daughter.

“Mia,” he said quietly, “why exactly do you think your mother needs me to be your daddy?”

My daughter’s smile disappeared.

And the answer she gave him made my heart stop.

"Because the bad man is coming back," Mia said, her tiny voice echoing in the dead-silent hallway.

"He sent Mommy a scary letter yesterday."

"Mommy cried in the bathroom and told Grandma on the phone that he wants to take me away."

"She said we don't have enough money to fight him."

Mia looked up at Adrian, her big brown eyes filled with an innocence that shattered me.

"You have a very big building. And a lot of money, right?"

"If you are my daddy, you can pay the lawyer, and the bad man can't take me away."

I felt the blood drain completely from my face.

The silence that followed was deafening.

Dozens of employees were pretending to look at their phones, but everyone was listening.

"Mia, that is enough," I choked out, grabbing her hand, my vision blurring with panicked tears.

I looked up at Adrian, expecting him to call security.

Expecting him to fire me on the spot for bringing my personal drama into his immaculate corporate world.

Instead, his jaw tightened.

The coldness returned to his eyes, but it wasn't directed at me.

It was directed at the invisible threat Mia had just named.

"My office," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave.

"Now."

I swallowed hard, holding Mia's hand tightly as I followed the billionaire into the lion's den.

I was certain my life was over.

I had no idea it was just beginning.
