Chapter 4 - The Shadow Returns

For three weeks, the illusion was perfect.

The media ate up the story of the "Ice King of Wall Street" melting for a single mother.

At work, Adrian and I played our parts flawlessly.

Stolen glances. Hand-holding in the elevator.

But at home, the lines were getting dangerously blurry.

We watched movies together. We cooked dinner together.

He helped Mia with her math homework.

I found myself rushing home not just for my daughter, but for him.

Then, reality crashed the party.

It was a Tuesday afternoon.

Adrian was in a board meeting, and I had stepped out to grab a coffee across the street.

As I walked out of the café, a hand grabbed my arm roughly.

I spun around and gasped.

Marcus.

He looked older, but his eyes held the same cruel arrogance I remembered.

"Hello, Lily," he sneered.

"Let go of me," I demanded, trying to pull my arm away.

"Playing house with a billionaire, huh?" Marcus laughed darkly.

"My lawyers told me about your little 'engagement'."

"You think that scares me? My new father-in-law has just as much money as Kane."

"I'm taking Mia, Lily. And once I have her, I'll make sure you never see her again."

Panic clawed at my throat.

"You don't care about Mia! You haven't seen her in four years!"

"She's my flesh and blood," he spat, tightening his grip. "And she's a perfect prop for my new image."

"Let her go."

The voice cut through the air like a razor blade.

We both froze.

Adrian was standing on the sidewalk, flanked by two massive security guards.

He looked like absolute murder.

His eyes were completely black with rage, the muscles in his jaw ticking.

Marcus scoffed, but I could see him tremble.

"This is between me and my ex-wife, Kane."

Adrian walked forward slowly, with the terrifying calm of a predator cornering its prey.

"She is my fiancée," Adrian said, his voice dangerously soft.

"And you have three seconds to remove your hand from her arm before I break it."

Marcus let go, taking a step back.

"You can't intimidate me," Marcus stammered. "I have rights."

Adrian stepped so close to Marcus that they were almost chest to chest.

"I had my team look into your new father-in-law's real estate deals," Adrian whispered.

"Tell me, Marcus, does he know you've been embezzling from his offshore accounts?"

Marcus turned completely white.

"If you ever come near Lily or Mia again," Adrian promised, "I won't just take your money."

"I will take your freedom. I will ruin your new marriage. I will bury you so deep you won't see daylight."

"Do we understand each other?"

Marcus didn't say a word. He turned and practically ran down the street.

I stood there, shaking violently as the adrenaline left my body.

Before I could fall, Adrian's arms were around me.

He pulled me against his chest, holding me tightly.

"You're safe," he murmured into my hair, his heart pounding just as fast as mine.

"I've got you. I've got you."

May you like

I buried my face in his suit, breathing in the scent of cedar and expensive cologne.

In that moment, I knew I was completely, hopelessly in love with him.
