Chapter 14 - The Shadows of the Sterling Family

Across the bay in an elite private athletic club in downtown Boston, Julian Sterling sat alone at a corner table.
He was sipping straight whiskey at ten in the morning, his bloodshot eyes fixed on his laptop screen.
His father, Marcus Sterling, had forced him into a humiliating corner.
The Sterling hedge fund was bleeding sixty million dollars a day as Montgomery Global systematically dismantled their offshore credit lines.
Every prime commercial real estate deal Julian had brokered over the past three years was currently being audited for regulatory compliance.
The brass doors of the club's private lounge opened with a soft click.
Marcus Sterling strode into the room, his face pale, his silver hair unkempt, and his tailored suit wrinkled.
He didn't greet his son; he walked up to the table and swept Julian’s crystal whiskey tumbler onto the carpeted floor with a violent crash.
"Get up, you idiot," Marcus hissed, his teeth clenched in raw fury.
Julian jumped back, wiping splashed alcohol from his cashmere sweater.
"Father! What the hell is wrong with you?"
"What is wrong with me?" Marcus whispered with terrifying intensity, leaning down until his nose was an inch from Julian's.
"Christian Montgomery just called the Chairman of the New York Stock Exchange."
"He is shorting our primary infrastructure fund through three international banks in Zurich."
"By tomorrow afternoon, the Sterling family will be completely wiped off the municipal bond index."
Julian slumped back into his chair, running his hands frantically through his hair.
"Why? I left Fiona at the altar! I renounced her in front of three hundred people!"
"I did exactly what Christian Montgomery wanted!"
"You didn't do what he wanted, you fool," Marcus snapped, pulling a legal summons from his inner breast pocket and slapping it against the table.
"You participated in Aidan Vance’s harbor kickback schemes for two years."
"You accepted an eighty-thousand-dollar kickback on every container ship that docked without a state safety inspection."
Julian’s heart skipped a beat, the cold sweat drenching his collar.
"How... how does Montgomery know about the container kickbacks?"
"Because your precious ex-fiancée Fiona kept a diary of every bribe you ever gave her father!" Marcus shouted, his voice cracking with rage.
"She handed over the safety deposit box key to the federal prosecutor two days ago to shave eight months off her prison sentence!"
Julian felt the room spin wildly around him.
The girl he had used to secure cheap harbor permits had turned on him the second the handcuffs clicked around her wrists.
"What do we do?" Julian stammered, his arrogant posture dissolving into whimpering terror.
"We go to Montgomery Tower right now," Marcus answered, grabbing Julian by the scruff of his coat collar and yanking him to his feet.
"You are going to walk into Mabel Montgomery’s office on your knees."
"You are going to kiss the ground she walks on and beg her to accept our forty-million-dollar settlement."
"And if you utter a single arrogant word, Julian, I will disown you from the Sterling trust before we leave the parking garage."
Julian nodded frantically, his legs shaking so violently he could barely keep his balance.
Thirty minutes later, the two men stood inside the marble lobby of Montgomery Tower.
The security guards, fully briefed on their arrival, escorted them into the private top-floor conference room.
Sitting at the far end of the immense mahogany table was not Christian Montgomery.
It was me.
I wore an impeccably tailored black silk jumpsuit with a thin platinum belt, reading through an operational shipping report.
I didn't look up as the two men were ushered into the room.
Marcus Sterling immediately stepped forward, clearing his throat and bowing his head low.
"Mrs. Montgomery... Mabel. We are deeply grateful for five minutes of your valuable time."
Julian stood beside him, keeping his eyes glued to the carpet, looking like a whipped dog.
"State your business, Marcus," I said calmly, turning a page without glancing at them.
"I have a harbor fleet inspection in twenty minutes."
"We are prepared to transfer full ownership of the South Pier container terminal back to Clara Maritime," Marcus pleaded, his voice trembling with desperate humility.
"We are offering forty million dollars in unencumbered commercial paper to settle any civil claims."
"All we ask in return is that Montgomery Capital stops shorting our hedge fund on the open market."
I closed the folder with a quiet, decisive thud.
I finally lifted my eyes, looking straight into Julian Sterling’s cowardly face.
"Do you remember what you said to me three weeks ago at the family rehearsal dinner, Julian?"
Julian flinched, his throat working convulsively as he tried to swallow.
"You pulled me aside near the coat check," I continued, my voice smooth and lethal.
"You told me that if I didn't smile more at Fiona’s wedding, you would make sure Aidan cut off my health insurance."
"You told me that girls like me were lucky to be allowed into the room with men like you."
"Mabel... I was wrong! I was trying to protect the family dynamic!" Julian cried, taking a desperate step forward before two armed guards blocked his path.
"I was an arrogant fool! Please... don't destroy my father’s life work because of my stupidity!"
I stood up from the Chairman’s seat, slipping my fountain pen into my breast pocket.
"Your father’s life work was built on stolen harbor kickbacks, Julian."
"You didn't build an empire; you built a parasite."
"I don't want your forty million dollars."
"And I don't need your South Pier terminal."
I walked around the table toward the double doors, pausing two feet from Marcus Sterling.
"By four o'clock today, the Securities and Exchange Commission will issue an emergency asset freeze on Sterling Capital."

"Enjoy your afternoon, gentlemen."
I walked out of the conference room without looking back once, leaving the two terrified men listening to the sound of their family dynasty crumbling into ash.
