Chapter 5 - The Midnight Ride to the Penthouse

Christian led me out of the suffocating ballroom, his security team forming a moving perimeter that kept the gawking crowd at bay.

The heavy brass doors clicked shut behind us, cutting off Fiona’s hysterical wailing and Aidan’s pathetic shouts for mercy.

We stepped out onto the marble staircase of the grand hotel into the cool autumn Boston night.

A convoy of three identical black armored luxury sedans waited at the foot of the steps with their engines humming quietly.

The lead driver immediately stepped out and held the rear passenger door open for us.

Christian didn't let go of my hand for a single second.

He guided me into the supple leather interior, following immediately behind and sliding close beside me.

The heavy door slammed shut with an airtight seal, plunging the cabin into absolute, serene silence.

The city lights reflected against the tinted windows as the convoy pulled away from the curb.

For the first time in two hours, the cold adrenaline that had kept me upright began to recede.

My body trembled slightly as the reality of what just occurred washed over my skin.

Christian immediately reached out, pulling me across the leather seat until I was pressed against his chest.

His hand came up to cradle the back of my head, his fingers gently tangling in my dark hair.

"Breathe, Mabel," he murmured, his voice rumbling softly against my ear.

"You're safe. It's over."

"I didn't think he would go that far," I whispered, the damp silk of my dress chilling against my ribs.

"I knew Aidan was greedy. I knew Fiona was spiteful."

"But to pour wine on me before three hundred people and call me a failure on a microphone..."

"They wanted to break your spirit completely so you would never challenge them for your mother’s estate," Christian said, his tone turning into cold steel.

"They knew the statute of limitations on the inheritance fraud was approaching next month."

"They thought if they crushed your self-worth tonight, you would sign whatever waiver they put in front of you."

I pulled back slightly, looking into his sharp gray eyes.

"You knew about the inheritance waiver?"

"Of course I did," Christian replied, gently brushing a stray hair away from my forehead.

"I’ve had a forensic accounting team digging into Aidan Vance’s offshore accounts for six months."

"I didn't tell you because I wanted concrete proof before giving you false hope."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver flash drive, placing it into my open palm.

"Every dollar Aidan took from your mother’s accounts is documented here."

"Every fraudulent transfer he used to finance Fiona’s European vacations and his own failing harbor warehouses."

"He didn't just mismanage the money; he committed federal wire fraud."

I closed my fingers around the cold piece of metal, feeling an overwhelming wave of vindication wash over me.

"What happens to them now?" I asked quietly.

"The bank will freeze their personal and business accounts at eight o'clock tomorrow morning," Christian said without a trace of hesitation.

"The wedding venue will demand immediate payment for the catering and open bar, which will bounce."

"Julian Sterling's father will withdraw all commercial ties by midnight."

"By noon tomorrow, the Vance family will be bankrupt, socially ruined, and facing an active indictment from the United States Attorney’s Office."

He paused, looking deeply into my eyes, searching for any sign of hesitation or regret.

"Unless you want me to call off the dogs, Mabel."

"If you want to show them mercy, say the word, and I will let them drown in their own debt without sending them to prison."

I looked down at the ruined silk gown, stained with the red wine Aidan had poured with such sadistic joy.

I remembered twelve years of cold dinners, verbal abuse, and being treated like invisible trash in my own childhood home.

I remembered Fiona laughing while she wore my mother’s heirloom earrings to her high school prom.

"No mercy," I said, my voice hardening into pure resolve.

"They wrote this ending themselves."

A faint, appreciative smirk touched the corners of Christian’s lips.

"That’s my girl," he murmured.

The car glided smoothly into the private underground garage of the Montgomery Tower overlooking Boston Harbor.

The private elevator waited with open doors, programmed to take us directly to the top floor penthouse.

As the elevator doors closed, Christian turned me toward him, his hands resting on my hips.

May you like

"Now," he said, his voice dropping an octave, filled with raw intensity.

"Let's get you out of that ruined dress and into a hot bath."
