Chapter 3 - The Descent of the King

Forty minutes after I was rolled into the operating room, St. Jude’s Hospital became the center of an earthquake.

Genevieve was still texting on her phone, drafting an email to the board of Blackwood Holdings regarding the "sudden domestic tragedy," when the floor beneath her feet began to vibrate.

It was not a metaphor.

The bulletproof windows of the eighth-floor executive pavilion were rattling in their steel casings.

Down below, on the ground level, the quiet street had been completely sealed off.

Fleet after fleet of midnight-black Cadillac Escalades, flashing discreet federal emergency beacons, tore onto the hospital plaza.

Dozens of men in sharp, charcoal tactical suits exited the vehicles in synchronous precision.

They formed a perimeter, pushing back local paparazzi and standard hospital security guards like leaves before a storm.

Inside the hospital lobby, the double doors were kicked open.

The Chairman of the Hospital Board of Trustees, an eighty-year-old billionaire who owned half the city’s real estate, came sprinting down the hallway in his socks, completely out of breath.

Behind him walked six prominent city council members and the Chief of Police, Arthur Vance.

Their faces were pale.

Their eyes were wide with a terror so raw it stripped away every ounce of their social pedigree.

“Where is she?!” the Board Chairman screamed at the nurses’ station, his hands visibly shaking.

“Where was she assigned? Which theater?!”

Genevieve frowned, standing up and smoothing down her designer blazer.

She walked out into the corridor, looking at the assembled city elite with raised eyebrows.

“Chairman Vance? What is the meaning of this commotion?” she demanded, using her signature aristocratic tone.

“This is a private medical wing. My family is dealing with a sordid domestic accident.”

“I expect absolute decorum on this floor!”

Nobody answered her.

The Chief of Police didn’t even look in her direction.

Instead, every single suit-clad executive, every board member, and every heavily armed federal agent snapped to attention, stepping back to line both sides of the corridor with their backs pinned against the walls.

Their heads bowed simultaneously.

A dead, suffocating silence swept over the hallway.

The heavy sound of expensive, handmade leather oxfords hit the tile floor.

Slow.

Measured.

Heavier than thunder.

A man rounded the corner.

He was not wearing the faded henley or the worn jeans he had walked out of the house with an hour ago.

He wore an Italian bespoke three-piece charcoal suit cut from vicuña wool, the fabric absorbing the overhead fluorescent light.

A platinum pocket watch chain gleamed at his waist.

His dark hair was slicked back sharply from his forehead, exposing eyes that were no longer gentle, soft, or patient.

They were the eyes of a merciless conqueror.

An ancient predator that had merely been playing human for five long years.

Julian.

Genevieve’s jaw dropped. She took a stunned step forward, her voice trembling with sheer disbelief.

“Julian...? What... what are you wearing? What is this circus?”

Julian did not turn his head.

He did not acknowledge that a woman named Genevieve Blackwood even existed on this earth.

He walked past her as if she were a pillar of dirty salt.

Victoria Sterling gasped, her phone slipping from her fingers and shattering on the hard hospital floor.

“Julian?” she stammered, taking a step toward him. “Julian, I came as soon as your mother told me. It’s horrible, the baby is—”

Julian stopped.

The air in the entire hallway dropped ten degrees.

He turned his head just three inches to the left.

His gaze locked onto Victoria’s face.

It was a look of such utter, absolute, freezing violence that Victoria choked on her own breath and stumbled backward, collapsing hard onto the sofa.

Julian reached into the breast pocket of his bespoke jacket.

He didn't pull out a wallet.

He withdrew an ultra-classified, obsidian-titanium identification credential bearing the crest of the Department of Defense and the Sovereign Trust of Blackwood Prime.

He dropped it into the trembling hands of Police Chief Vance.

His voice never rose above a conversational whisper.

It was smooth.

Deadly.

Irrevocable.

“My wife was pushed from the top of the central stairs,” Julian said.

“She attempted to assassinate my heir and murder the future matriarch of the Blackwood Empire.”

Chief Vance swallowed hard, staring at the black credential, sweat pouring down his temples.

“Understood, Mr. Chairman,” Vance whispered, bowing his head until his chin touched his collar.

Julian’s jaw twitched.

“Arrest her. Strip her of all diplomatic immunity. Put her in maximum isolation.”

“And if she speaks one word without my permission, charge every member of her surviving lineage with federal treason.”

Genevieve’s face turned from confusion to an ungodly, chalky white.

Her knees began to wobble.

“Julian!” she shrieked, her aristocratic facade disintegrating into hysterical terror.

“I am your mother! I raised you! You are an unemployed failure without me! How dare you speak to the Chief like that!”

Julian finally turned his eyes fully toward her.

A thin, razor-sharp smile touched the corner of his lips.

“Mother?” he said softly.

“You haven’t owned this family since Father drew his last breath seven years ago.”

“You were merely the housekeeper I allowed to stay in my mansion so my wife wouldn't feel intimidated by our wealth.”

May you like

“Take her away.”

Two massive federal agents stepped forward, grabbed Genevieve’s arms, and snapped steel handcuffs around her wrists with a sickening, definitive click.
