Chapter 8 - Shattered Glass

Despite the triumphant display at the gala, peace did not come without one final, desperate struggle.

A cornered beast is most dangerous when its defeat is absolute.

Arthur Sterling, the patriarch of Sterling Logistics and Victoria’s father, had watched his entire multi-generational empire collapse into bankruptcy in less than ten days.

His daughter was disgraced, his ships were seized by maritime authorities, and his credit lines had been annihilated by Julian’s financial stranglehold.

Driven by madness and ruin, Sterling decided that if he was going down, he would drag Julian down with him.

It happened three days after the gala.

Julian was scheduled to attend an emergency closed-door meeting at the Department of Maritime Security downtown to finalize the permanent seizure of the Sterling cargo fleet.

I had remained at the Sovereign Estate with our newborn son, whom we had named Marcus, after Julian’s late father.

The estate was a fortress, perched high on the ocean cliffs, guarded by twenty private security operatives.

Or so we believed.

At precisely 2:00 PM, while Julian’s motorcade was entering the downtown tunnel system, the power grid across the entire cliffside estate cut out simultaneously.

The high-tech security cameras blinked black.

The electronic security gates lost power, defaulting into manual override mode.

A heavy silence descended over the sprawling mansion, broken only by the distant crashing of waves against the rocks below.

Inside the nursery, I was rocking Marcus in my arms when the sound of muffled gunfire echoed from the front courtyard.

Crack. Crack-crack.

My blood ran cold.

Instinctively, I pulled Marcus tight against my chest, wrapping a soft cashmere blanket around his head to muffle the sound.

The door to the nursery burst open.

Captain Vance, the chief of Julian’s private security detail, rushed in with a tactical rifle in his hands, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

“Mrs. Blackwood! We are under attack!” Vance shouted, his eyes scanning the hallway behind him.

“A rogue mercenary team breached the perimeter gate! They cut the main power lines!”

“Julian? Where is Julian?!” I demanded, my heart hammering like a trapped bird against my ribs.

“Mr. Blackwood was ambushed in the downtown tunnel! It was a coordinated distraction to pull our elite units away from the estate!”

Vance stepped to the corner of the nursery and pulled open a hidden panel disguised as custom wainscoting.

Behind it was a reinforced steel safe room door with an independent hydraulic locking system.

“Get inside, ma’am! Now! The safe room has its own air supply and satellite communications! You will be safe until Mr. Blackwood arrives!”

Before I could take two steps toward the vault, a heavy explosion rocked the lower floor.

The floor beneath our feet shook violently.

From the staircase down the hall came the heavy thud of combat boots.

“Vance!” a harsh, gravelly voice echoed through the corridor. “Give up the girl and the baby, and you walk out of here with ten million in offshore crypto!”

Vance’s eyes widened. He shoved me into the safe room with desperate force.

“Lock it from the inside, Sophia! Do not open it for anyone except Mr. Blackwood!”

Vance turned back toward the hallway, raising his weapon.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

A spray of automatic gunfire tore through the nursery doorway.

Vance collapsed onto the carpet with a strangled gasp, blood blooming across his tactical vest.

Through the smoke, a man stepped into the nursery.

It was Arthur Sterling.

His expensive suit was stained with gunpowder and sweat, his silver hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot with pure, unadulterated insanity.

In his right hand, he held a heavy caliber pistol.

“Found you,” Sterling breathed, a psychotic grin stretching across his haggard face as he stepped over Vance’s body.

“You little street rat.”

“Your husband destroyed my daughter’s life.”

“He destroyed my family’s name.”

“Now I’m going to throw you and that bastard child off these cliffs, and Julian will watch his world burn just like I watched mine!”

He raised the pistol, aiming directly at my forehead.

I didn't cower.

I didn't beg.

The memory of Genevieve shoving me down the stairs flashed through my mind—the feeling of helplessness, the taste of my own blood on the marble.

I had sworn to my son that I would never be a victim again.

With lightning speed, I whipped the heavy bronze candelabra from the nursery table and hurled it directly at Sterling’s face.

The heavy metal struck his wrist with a dull crunch.

The pistol discharged into the ceiling—BANG!—plaster raining down on our heads.

Sterling roared in pain, dropping the weapon.

I lunged forward, not toward the safe room, but toward the open balcony doors.

“Run all you want, you little bitch!” Sterling snarled, clutching his bruised wrist and drawing a combat knife from his boot.

“There’s nowhere to go! You’re trapped!”

I backed onto the stone balcony, the wind whipping my hair across my face, Marcus crying softly in my arms.

Behind me was a three-hundred-foot drop into the raging ocean.

Before me was a madman with a knife.

Sterling took three slow steps forward, laughing hysterically against the howling wind.

“Goodbye, Mrs. Blackwood!” he screamed, lunging forward with the blade raised.

Suddenly, the sky above the cliffside exploded in deafening thunder.

A black military helicopter dropped out of the storm clouds like a falling stone, its massive blades whipping the ocean spray into a blinding mist.

May you like

From the side door of the helicopter, fifty feet above the balcony, a man jumped without a harness.

Julian.
