Chapter 12 - The Interrogation and the Paper Trail

By Monday morning, the full investigative machinery of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) had thoroughly dismantled every financial corner of Richard and Camille’s domestic life.
When an individual attempts to force open a secure military container containing classified defense communications, the federal government does not simply look at the crowbar marks; they audit every single bank account, tax return, and digital transaction associated with the perpetrator’s name over the preceding seven years.
What the federal forensic accountants uncovered inside Richard Vance’s business ledgers transformed a simple trespass incident into a sprawling, multi-count federal indictment.
Richard’s supposedly struggling automotive and home remodeling business was not merely failing due to bad economic luck.
It was an elaborate shell corporation through which Richard had systematically laundered money, filed fraudulent COVID-19 relief loans amounting to over four hundred and eighty thousand dollars, and illegally diverted corporate funds into personal offshore gambling accounts.
Even worse, investigators retrieved Camille’s text messages from her seized smartphone via cloud backups.
The text thread between Camille and Richard from the previous Wednesday night—the exact night of our mother’s birthday dinner—laid bare the sinister, premeditated conspiracy they had hatched against me.
At 9:45 PM on Wednesday, immediately after I had left our mother’s house, Camille had texted Richard:
“Valeria just confirmed she’s going to Cape May on Friday. She thinks she’s getting a quiet weekend. I took the spare deadbolt key out of her coat pocket while she was in the bathroom.”
Richard had texted back three minutes later:
“Perfect. We move the whole family in on Friday morning before she gets there. My dad is going to bring his friends too.”
“Once we’re inside, we establish residency under New Jersey squatter tenancy laws. If she tries to kick us out, the state police will tell her it’s a civil tenant dispute and she’ll have to spend six months evicting us through the courts.”
“By the time she gets a court date, she’ll be deployed again, and we’ll have full possession of the house for the entire summer rent-free.”
And Camille’s final, horrifying response:
“She doesn't deserve that house anyway. She doesn't even have a husband or kids to share it with. If she makes a scene, we’ll record her, scream that she attacked dad, and ruin her squeaky-clean military career until she signs the deed over to us just to make it go away.”
When Special Agent Marcus Vance (no relation) of the FBI presented those printed text transcripts to Camille inside the federal interrogation room on Monday afternoon, my sister’s hysterical screams could be heard throughout the entire floor.
There was no plausible deniability left.
There was no claim of a spontaneous family beach trip.
It was a cold, calculated, premeditated conspiracy to commit grand theft of real estate, extortion, and interstate wire fraud.
Across the hall, Richard was breaking down under the intense questioning of two seasoned Army CID investigators.
Faced with high-definition video of himself swinging a crowbar at an official Department of Defense safe, Richard turned on everyone he loved in a desperate bid to save his own skin.
He signed a sworn affidavit stating that Camille was the mastermind behind the entire plot.
He claimed that Camille had stolen the keys, that Camille had told him the safe contained hundreds of thousands of dollars in illicit cash, and that Camille had ordered him to throw my grandmother’s lamp off the balcony to intimidate me into leaving.
When Tommy and Arthur learned that Richard had turned state's evidence to reduce his own federal prison sentence, the Vance family imploded from within.
Arthur Vance suffered a mild cardiac episode in his cell after screaming across the exercise yard that his own son was a spineless coward who had destroyed their family name.

Tommy Vance agreed to testify against Richard in exchange for having his property destruction charges reduced to a misdemeanor probation.
The united wall of arrogant bullies who had stood on my porch three days earlier laughing and drinking beer had degenerated into a pack of cornered, snarling hyenas ripping each other apart for scraps of judicial mercy.
