Chapter 8 - The Sister’s Ultimatum

Before I could even begin exporting the raw surveillance files from the cloud server, the heavy knocker on my front door rattled loudly.

I didn't open the door blindly.

I checked the closed-circuit monitor mounted beside the refrigerator.

Standing on the driveway at seven-fifteen in the morning, accompanied by none other than my sister Camille, was our sixty-two-year-old mother, Eleanor Sterling.

They had driven all night from Pennsylvania, clearly riding high on the euphoric wave of their viral social media fame.

I took a deep, steadying breath, opened the heavy oak front door, and leaned against the frame with my arms crossed over my chest.

Camille didn't look like the weeping, terrified victim from the viral TikTok video anymore.

She was wearing oversized designer sunglasses, holding an expensive iced coffee from the local bakery in town, and carrying herself with the triumphant smirk of someone who believed she held the entire United States government by the throat.

Our mother, Eleanor, looked pale, frazzled, and absolutely enraged.

She pushed past Camille, stormed up the porch steps, and stopped two inches from my face, her finger trembling with self-righteous fury.

“Are you proud of yourself now, Valeria?!” our mother hissed, her voice vibrating with venom.

“Are you completely satisfied with destroying our family’s reputation across the entire nation?!”

“Good morning to you too, Mother,” I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

“Do not ‘good morning’ me, you ungrateful, cold-hearted monster!” Eleanor yelled, slamming her designer handbag onto the porch railing.

“I haven't slept a single wink!”

“My phone has been ringing off the hook since three o’clock this morning!”

“Church members, neighbors, cousins from Ohio—everyone is calling asking why my eldest daughter is an abusive military dictator who attacks poor, defenseless children!”

“Did you watch Richard’s video, Mother?” I asked calmly.

“Of course I watched it!” Eleanor shrieked.

“The whole world watched it! Over three million people have seen what a cruel, selfish person you are!”

“And did you notice that Richard’s video completely omits the fact that he was trespassing on my property without my knowledge or consent?”

“Oh, stop hiding behind your stupid legal technicalities, Valeria!” Camille chimed in, taking off her sunglasses with a haughty, dramatic flick of her wrist.

“The public doesn’t give a damn about your deed, Val.”

“They care about humanity.”

“They care about a hard-working family being treated like dogs by an arrogant elitist.”

“You humiliated my husband in front of his father.”

“You made Arthur’s blood pressure spike to dangerous levels!”

“And now, you are going to pay for it.”

I looked Camille dead in her eyes, amused by the sheer audacity of her delusion.

“Pay for it? In what way, Camille?”

Camille pulled a folded piece of white legal paper from her back pocket and thrust it into my chest.

“Richard hired a top personal injury and civil rights attorney in Philadelphia this morning,” Camille said, her chest puffing out with pride.

“We are filing a twenty-million-dollar civil lawsuit against you personally and against the Department of the Army for emotional distress, civil rights violations, and child endangerment.”

“However, because I am your sister and because Mother begged me to have mercy on you, Richard is willing to settle this quietly out of court.”

I unfolded the paper with two fingers and scanned the typed bullet points.

The sheer, shameless greed laid out on that document was almost breathtaking in its audacity.

Clause One: Valeria Sterling was to immediately transfer full, unencumbered ownership of the Cape May beach house to Richard and Camille Vance as full compensation for emotional damages.

Clause Two: Valeria Sterling was to pay a cash settlement of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to Arthur and Beatrice Vance to cover ‘medical trauma and future distress’.

Clause Three: Valeria Sterling was to issue a public, recorded video apology to Richard Vance on TikTok, stating that she had lied, that she had acted out of mental instability, and that Richard had every right to be on the property.

In exchange, Richard would agree not to demand my formal dishonorable discharge from the United States Army.

I looked up from the paper, my gaze drifting from Camille’s smug, triumphant grin to our mother’s expectant, nodding face.

“You actually believe this is going to happen?” I asked quietly.

“You don’t have a choice, Valeria!” Eleanor snapped, grabbing my forearm in an attempt to shake me.

“Do you know what will happen to your career if this lawsuit goes to trial?”

“You will be stripped of your pension! You will be kicked out of the military in disgrace!”

“Sign the house over to your sister, pay Richard the settlement money from your savings, and make this nightmare go away!”

“It’s the only way you can save your soul and keep this family together!”

I slowly slipped my arm out of our mother’s grasp, stepped back into the doorway, and folded the legal paper into four neat squares.

Then, looking Camille straight in the eyes, I tore the paper in half.

Then in fourths.

Then in eighths.

I let the white scraps flutter down onto the porch floorboards like dirty confetti.

Camille’s smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, ugly snarl.

“You arrogant bitch,” Camille spat, her voice dropping into a vicious hiss.

“You just signed your own professional death warrant.”

“We gave you a chance to save yourself, Val.”

“Now, Richard is going live with a national television morning show at ten o’clock, and we are going to burn your entire life to the ground.”

“Make sure Richard doesn’t miss his television appearance, Camille,” I said, my voice as calm and steady as a burial shroud.

“Because when I finish uploading my files in two hours, neither of you will ever have to worry about looking for a beach house again.”

May you like

“You will be spending the next seven years figuring out how to afford bail.”

Before either of them could speak another word, I shut the heavy front door directly in their faces, locked the reinforced deadbolt, and walked back to my computer terminal.
