Chapter 15 - The House on Maple Street

Two weeks after the trial, the autumn leaves had turned to brilliant shades of copper and gold, blanketing the quiet residential streets of our neighborhood in crisp color.

Sophie and Emma were back in their own bedrooms.

The attic stench from Millbrook was long gone, replaced by the scent of fresh paint, lavender, and baking cookies from Aunt Teresa’s kitchen downstairs.

I stood on the front porch of our home, holding a steaming mug of coffee, watching the golden afternoon sunlight catch the green canopy of the oak trees in our front yard.

The front gate clicked open.

Sophie and Emma came running up the wooden steps, their school backpacks slung over their shoulders, laughing and arguing playfully about who got to choose the movie for family movie night.

Neither of them was barefoot anymore.

Both girls wore clean, bright sneakers, their steps steady, grounded, and secure.

Emma dropped her backpack by the front door and threw her arms around my waist, burying her face into my sweater.

“Dad! Aunt Teresa made chocolate chip cookies!” Emma announced happily.

“Go wash your hands first, young lady,” I laughed, kissing the top of her head.

Sophie walked up the steps more slowly, stopping beside me on the porch.

She looked out across the quiet street, then up at my face with a quiet maturity that belonged to someone twice her age.

“Dad?” she asked softly.

“Yeah, sweetheart?”

“Do you think Mom knows?”

I knelt down on the wooden porch boards, taking both of her small hands into mine, just as I had done in the bridal suite weeks ago—only this time, there was no terror, no rain, and no lies hanging over our heads.

“I know she does, Sophie,” I whispered, smiling as a warm breeze rustled the autumn leaves above us.

“Your mother is watching over us every single day.

And she knows that because of you girls, we are finally safe.”

May you like

Sophie smiled back, throwing her arms around my neck and hugging me tight.

I stood up, holding my daughters close against my chest, and walked through the front door into a home that was finally filled with truth, love, and light.
