Chapter 6 - The Key to the Vault

The amber light from the hospital nightlight flickered across Sophie’s pale cheeks.

Her words hung in the sterile air like a shroud of toxic smoke, poisoning every memory I held of Laura’s final weeks.

“What did you say, Sophie?” I repeated, my voice cracking into a desperate whisper as I leaned closer to her face.

“Did you see something in the bathroom?”

Sophie blinked slowly, the exhaustion of her ordeal pulling her eyelids down, but the terror in her green eyes was wide awake.

“Mom told me not to tell anyone while she was in the hospital because Claire said we would be sent away if we caused trouble,” Sophie whispered, her voice trembling.

“She said Claire would come into the master bathroom while you were downstairs working.

She would take out the orange prescription bottles from the top shelf.

Mom caught her once.

She saw Claire pouring out the white morphine capsules and replacing them with harmless sugar pills, and sometimes doubling the doses of the anti-nausea meds until Mom couldn't even keep her eyes open to speak to you.”

The world seemed to tilt violently on its axis.

Every agonizing memory of Laura fading away—lying unresponsive in the hospital bed, unable to whisper her last words to me, slipping away into unconsciousness days before the doctors predicted—flashed through my mind with sickening clarity.

It wasn't just the cancer that had stolen my wife from me.

It was murder, carried out by the gentle, smiling hands of the woman I had trusted with our lives.

“Did Mom put that in the box?” I asked, my fingers tightening around the brass key 412 in my palm.

Sophie nodded weakly against the pillow.

“Mom said she had the nurses mail a sealed copy of her hospital diary to the bank box two weeks before she passed.

She told me that if Claire ever tried to take our home, you would need that box to prove what really happened in room 412.”

I kissed Sophie’s forehead, my heart beating with a cold, terrifying fury.

“Get some sleep, sweetheart.

Rachel is right outside.

I have to go to the bank.”

I stood up from the bed, slipping the brass key into my jeans pocket alongside Laura’s handwritten letter.

When I stepped out into the hallway, Rachel was pacing back and forth near the nursing station, her face etched with worry.

“Daniel, where are you going? The girls are finally asleep,” Rachel asked, stopping in her tracks.

“I’m going to First National Bank on Oak Street,” I said, my voice deadpan and absolute.

“Safe-deposit box 412.

Laura left evidence about her medical treatment in that box.

Claire didn't just kidnap my children and forge my signature—she poisoned my wife.”

Rachel gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, tears instantly spilling over her lower lashes.

“Oh, dear God in heaven,” she choked out.

“She killed her.

That monster actually murdered Laura.”

“Watch the girls,” I said, turning down the corridor toward the elevators.

“Don’t let anyone into this room except Dr.

May you like

Miller or the state troopers.

I’m going to end this tonight.”
