Chapter 12 - No More Locked Doors

“You’re doing incredible work here,” Richard said, his hands resting on my waist.

“I had a good teacher,” I replied, looking up at him.

The tension that had been building between us for months was suddenly suffocating.

“I’m tired of being your teacher,” Richard murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips.

“What do you want to be?” I challenged softly.

He didn’t answer with words.

He leaned down and kissed me, deep and passionate.

It was a kiss that promised security, respect, and a future I had never dared to dream of.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, kissing him back with everything I had.

When we finally broke apart, we were both breathless.

“I don’t want to hide anymore,” Richard said, his forehead resting against mine.

“No more locked doors,” I agreed.

Six months later, the trial concluded.

Evelyn Vance was sentenced to twenty years in federal prison.

Nathan got fifteen.

I watched the verdict from the gallery, holding Richard’s hand.

When the judge struck the gavel, Evelyn turned and locked eyes with me.

There was no superiority left in her gaze. Only the crushing realization that she had been defeated by the woman she thought was nothing.

I didn’t smile. I didn’t gloat.

I simply turned away and walked out of the courtroom with the man I loved.

That night, we celebrated at the mansion.

It didn’t feel like a prison anymore. We had redecorated, bringing in light, life, and warmth.

I stood on the balcony, looking out over the manicured lawns.

I thought about the woman who had packed two suitcases and a photograph, terrified of the world.

She was gone.

In her place stood a woman who had faced down billionaires, outsmarted murderers, and found her own worth.

Richard stepped onto the balcony, wrapping his arms around me from behind.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked, kissing my neck.

“Survival,” I smiled, leaning back into his embrace.

“It turns out, I’m pretty good at it.”

He chuckled, turning me around to face him.

“You’re the strongest person I know, Emily.”

He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket.

“And I don’t want to spend a single day of my life without you.”

He opened the box, revealing a stunning diamond ring.

I looked at the ring, then at Richard, my heart overflowing with absolute certainty.

“Yes,” I said, tears of joy stinging my eyes.

My ex-family had laughed when they broke me.

But as Richard slid the ring onto my finger, I knew I had won the final victory.

I had built a new life, and this time, it was unbreakable.
