Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Caleb immediately dropped to his knees, throwing his hands in the air, sobbing. "I didn't do anything! It was her! She made me come!"
Beatrice, completely unhinged by the loss of her wealth, her reputation, and her control, turned toward the officers, still holding the tire iron.
"Do you know who I am?!" she screamed at them. "I am Beatrice Vance! You work for me!"
An officer fired a taser.
The prongs hit her shoulder.
Beatrice stiffened, dropping the tire iron, and collapsed onto the asphalt, twitching.
The officers swarmed them, clicking handcuffs onto both my mother and my brother.
I stood in silence, watching through the iron bars as they were hauled up from the ground, humiliated, broken, and arrested.
A police sergeant walked up to the gate, tipping his hat.
"Ms. Vance? We got a call about a breach. Are you alright?"
"I'm perfectly fine, officer," I said.
"Do you want to press charges for the property damage?" he asked, gesturing to the dented gate and the smashed intercom box.
I looked at Beatrice.
She was glaring at me from the back of the squad car, her face pressed against the glass, her designer clothes covered in dirt and asphalt.
She looked exactly like what she had always called me.
Trash.
"Yes," I said clearly. "I want to press full charges for the property damage. Furthermore, I want to press felony assault charges for an incident that occurred at the Obsidian Resort last Sunday. I have the medical records for third-degree burns, and there is video evidence currently circulating online."
The officer nodded. "We are aware of the video, ma'am. We will add assault and battery to her booking."

I watched as the police cars drove away, taking the last remnants of my toxic past with them.
The silence that returned to the hills was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.
