Chapter 8 - A New Horizon

The ship docked in Florida two days later.
I disembarked through the VIP lane, breezing through customs in less than fifteen minutes.
I didn't wait around to see if my family needed a ride to the airport. I had booked myself a first-class ticket home.
When I finally unlocked the door to my condo, the silence greeted me like an old friend.
The air felt lighter. I felt lighter.
The fallout was predictable.
When they finally got home and regained Wi-Fi access, my inbox was flooded with furious emails. Extended relatives I hadn't spoken to in years tried to message me on Facebook, calling me a monster, a terrible daughter, a selfish brat.
I didn't argue. I didn't defend myself.
I simply hit 'Block'. Over and over again.
A month later, the true reality of their situation set in.
Dad’s truck needed a new transmission. The bill was $4,000.
An email slipped through my spam filter. It was from Mom.
“Millie, we know things got heated on the trip. We are willing to forgive you. But your father needs his truck for work. Please transfer the money by Friday. We can talk about moving forward after.”
We are willing to forgive you.
The audacity would have made me cry a year ago. Now, it just made me laugh.
I replied with one sentence.
“Dad wants only family. Best of luck.”
I deleted the email and permanently blocked her address.
It’s been a year since the Miller Family Cruise.
I haven't spoken to them since.
I heard through the grapevine that Vanessa had to move back into the engine room—sorry, I mean, back into my parents' basement—because she couldn't afford her rent. Dad had to downsize his business. Mom had to get a part-time job.
They had to learn how to survive without their human ATM.
As for me?
I got promoted at work. I bought a new car. I started traveling.
I went to Chicago to visit the friends I made on the catamaran. I spent Thanksgiving with them, surrounded by loud laughter, genuine warmth, and people who asked me how I was doing—and actually cared about the answer.
I finally found the family I was always looking for.
And the best part?

I didn't have to buy them a cruise to make them stay.
I just had to be Millie.
