Chapter 10 - The Clean Slate

Three weeks after the federal injunction, the corporate carcass of MeridianLink was officially dissolved through bankruptcy court proceedings. Adam Carter disappeared from public view, retreating to an undisclosed location in Nevada while facing potential criminal indictments for securities fraud. Vanessa Sloan’s public relations firm dropped her within forty-eight hours of the SEC filing, and her social media accounts vanished behind privacy walls.

I sat in the top-floor corner office of a sleek, minimalist tech incubator in downtown San Francisco. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow across the bay. There were no champagne towers, no white orchids, and no Wall Street reporters shouting questions from the lobby.

Just a clean oak desk, a dual-monitor setup, and a small team of six brilliant, dedicated engineers who actually understood the architecture we were building from scratch.

My phone chimed with a notification from the Delaware patent office. The new cryptography framework—registered under my sole name as founder and chief architect of Vance Protocol—was officially approved.

Chloe walked into my office carrying two cups of artisanal coffee, setting one down beside my keyboard with a satisfied grin.

"Vanguard wired the initial seed tranche this morning," Chloe said, leaning against the edge of the desk. "Julian says the institutional investors are lining up around the block to get in on the pre-launch."

"Tell Julian we're capping the round at ten million," I said, taking a sip of the coffee. "We don't need venture bloat. We need a product that actually works."

"You know," Chloe said, looking around the bright, quiet office, "you never did wear that white silk dress again."

I smiled, looking down at my hands. My left ring finger was bare, light, and completely unburdened.

"No," I said softly. "White is overrated. I prefer blue."
