Chapter 12 - The Unwritten Chapter

The rain returned to San Francisco by late evening, tapping a steady, rhythmic cadence against the glass of my downtown office. The rest of the team had gone home hours ago, leaving the floor quiet and still, save for the low hum of the server racks down the hall.

I sat at my desk, staring at the glowing monitor where the master branch of Vance Protocol was compiling its final nightly build. The compilation finished with a clean, green success message across the screen: Build 1048: Successful. Zero errors.

I closed my laptop, stood up, and slipped my wool coat over my shoulders. As I walked toward the private elevator, I caught my reflection in the polished glass panel beside the door. I wasn't wearing white silk, and there were no diamonds sparkling on my left hand. I wore a simple black turtleneck, tailored trousers, and comfortable walking shoes.

When the elevator doors opened, I stepped inside and pressed the ground-floor button. The descent was smooth, silent, and fast.

When I walked out into the lobby, the night air was crisp and clean, washed clean by the evening rain. The streetlights of Montgomery Street cast long, sharp reflections across the wet asphalt. I pulled my coat tight against the chill, tucked my hands into my pockets, and walked out into the city—not as someone's fiancée, not as a footnote in a billionaire’s success story, but as the sole author of my own life.
