Chapter 4 - The Crumbling Empire

Across the city, the Hale mansion was a scene of utter devastation.
Daniel sat on the floor of his once-immaculate study, surrounded by a sea of crumpled documents and empty scotch bottles. His phone had not stopped ringing for forty-eight hours, and every single call brought a new catastrophe.
First, it was the investors. The men he had invited to dinner had turned their cars around at the gate after receiving a personal warning from Mercer Global’s chief operating officer.
Then came the banks. Every line of credit, every mortgage, every business loan was frozen or called in for immediate repayment.
His supply chain for his logistics company evaporated overnight. Vendors refused to ship to him. Clients canceled their contracts, citing mysterious "compliance issues."
“Daniel!”
Vivian burst into the study, her hair unkempt, wearing a wrinkled nightgown. She looked ten years older than she had two days ago.
“The staff just left! All of them! The chef, the maids, the driver. They said their paychecks bounced!” she shrieked, wringing her hands. “You have to fix this! Call the bank! Tell them who we are!”
“We are nothing, Mother!” Daniel roared, hurling his crystal glass at the wall. It shattered into a hundred pieces. “Do you not understand? We are bankrupt! The Mercer family has blacklisted us from the entire financial sector!”
Vivian stumbled back, her face pale. “But... but she was just a quiet little orphan... She washed my feet!”
“She was Alexander Mercer’s daughter!” Daniel screamed, pulling at his hair. “And you made her scrub floors while she was bleeding from childbirth! You made her sleep on a mattress in the attic when she was pregnant!”
“You didn’t stop me!” Vivian fired back, her voice shrill and defensive. “You liked it! You liked having a wife you could control! You ignored her when she was in the hospital, not me!”
The truth of her words hit Daniel like a physical blow.
He slumped back against the wall, burying his face in his hands.
He remembered the way Emma used to look at him, with such pure, unadulterated adoration. He remembered how she never asked for jewelry, never complained about his long hours, and always had a hot meal waiting for him.
He had taken her for granted. He had viewed her lack of background as a weakness to be exploited, a way to make himself feel powerful.
If only he had known. If he had treated her like a queen, he would be the son-in-law of Alexander Mercer right now. He would have access to billions. He would be the king of the city.
Instead, he was a beggar in a foreclosed mansion.
His phone buzzed on the floor. It was an email from his lead defense attorney.
Daniel scrambled to grab it, hoping for a lifeline, a loophole, anything to stop the bleeding of his assets.
He opened the email. It was a single PDF attachment.
The subject line read: Petition for Absolute Divorce and Sole Custody.
Daniel stared at the screen, his chest heaving. She wasn't just taking his money. She was legally erasing him from her life and the life of his child.
“No,” Daniel muttered, a manic desperation taking hold of his eyes. “No, she loved me. I know she loved me. She’s just angry. If I can just see her, if I can just talk to her...”

He stumbled to his feet, ignoring his mother’s frantic questions, and grabbed his car keys.
He had to get to the Mercer tower. He had to remind Emma that he was her husband, the father of her child. He would beg, he would crawl, he would do whatever it took to get his golden goose back.
