Chapter 8 - The Heiress and Her Heir

One year later.

The Mercer estate was transformed into a wonderland of lights, flowers, and music. It was Lily’s first birthday, and the entire city’s elite had gathered to celebrate the youngest heir to the Mercer empire.

Waiters in white tuxedos carried trays of champagne. A string quartet played softly on the grand terrace.

I stood at the top of the sweeping staircase, holding Lily in my arms. She was wearing a beautiful little dress of gold and white silk, babbling happily and pointing at the twinkling chandeliers.

I wore a stunning emerald green evening gown, an heirloom diamond necklace resting against my collarbone.

“You look beautiful, sweetheart,” my father said, stepping up beside me. He looked younger, happier than he had in decades. He reached out and let Lily wrap her tiny fist around his finger.

“Thanks, Dad,” I smiled, resting my head against his shoulder.

“Are you ready to make your entrance?” Julian asked, coming up on my other side, adjusting his bowtie. “The press is waiting downstairs. They want a photo of the three generations of Mercers.”

“I’m ready,” I said.

As we descended the stairs, the crowd turned and applauded. Cameras flashed, capturing the image of power, resilience, and unshakeable family unity.

I smiled for the cameras, holding my daughter tight.

Miles away, in the freezing rain, a delivery truck pulled up to the back entrance of a grocery store.

Daniel Hale, soaked to the bone, his hands blistered and cracked, carried crates of spoiled produce to the dumpster. He paused to wipe the rain and sweat from his eyes, glancing through the glass window of the store.

On the small television mounted above the checkout counter, the evening news was playing.

The headline flashed in bold letters: MERCER HEIRESS CELEBRATES DAUGHTER’S FIRST BIRTHDAY.

Daniel stared at the screen. He saw me, radiant and untouchable, standing beside a billionaire father and a powerful brother. He saw the beautiful, healthy baby girl that he had thrown away for the sake of his own ego.

He pressed his dirty hand against the cold glass, a ragged sob tearing from his throat. The agonizing weight of his regret crushed whatever was left of his soul. He had held a diamond in his hands and threw it away because he thought it was glass.

But his tears didn't matter anymore. His pain was irrelevant to my world.

Back at the estate, I kissed Lily’s cheek as she blew out the single candle on her massive cake.

I closed my eyes and made a silent vow.

She would never know the coldness of a cruel home. She would never have to hide her true self to be loved. She would grow up fierce, independent, and completely unbreakable.

I opened my eyes, looking out at my family, my empire, and my beautiful daughter.

Emma Reed had died in that delivery room.

But Emma Mercer had been reborn, and she would reign forever.
