Chapter 2 - The Empire Strikes Back

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting a harsh, unforgiving light on the city. I was no longer in the house Daniel had abandoned me in. I was lying in a hyper-modern, medically equipped suite within the secure walls of the Whitmore ancestral estate. My father sat in a leather armchair in the corner of the room, his eyes never leaving the monitors tracking his unborn granddaughter’s heartbeat.

“Drink this, Evelyn,” Charles said gently, handing me a glass of fortified water. He looked older than I remembered, the silver in his hair more prominent, but the formidable aura surrounding him was entirely intact. “The doctors say the contractions have subsided for now. You just need rest.”

“I don’t want to rest,” I murmured, adjusting the pillows behind my back. “I want to know what’s happening downtown.”

A faint, dangerous smile touched my father's lips. He tapped the screen of his tablet and mirrored it to the large television on the wall. “Watch for yourself.”

The screen displayed silent, high-definition security footage from the lobby of 'Daniel Vance Innovations,' the tech firm Daniel claimed he built from the ground up with a 'small loan.'

At exactly 8:00 AM, Daniel strode into the gleaming glass building, flanked by Vanessa, who was already acting like the incoming CEO's wife. He walked toward the private executive elevator and swiped his keycard. The reader flashed red. He frowned, swiped it again, and then aggressively tapped the glass. Red again.

A moment later, two large men in dark suits—Whitmore security operatives—approached him. Through the silent footage, I could see Daniel’s arrogant posture shift to confusion, then outrage, as he began shouting at the men.

“What are they telling him?” I asked, leaning forward, my heart pounding with a dark sense of satisfaction.

“They are informing Mr. Vance that his employment as a figurehead has been immediately terminated by the board,” Charles explained smoothly. “A board entirely controlled by your trust. They are also handing him a cease and desist order, forbidding him from entering the premises of a company he owns precisely zero percent of.”

On the screen, Daniel's face was flushed purple with rage. He pulled out his phone, likely trying to call his personal bankers, only to find the lines dead or his accounts frozen pending a 'fraud investigation.' Vanessa stood a few feet away, her smug demeanor evaporating as she realized the golden goose was suddenly, violently, choking.

The true genius of my father’s quiet protection over the years was how seamlessly he had woven the net. Whenever Daniel thought he was securing a massive investor, it was a Whitmore shell company. Whenever he signed a lease for a building, it was with a Whitmore real estate firm. My father had allowed Daniel to play the king, solely to keep me comfortable, waiting patiently for the day Daniel's true nature would force my hand.

“He drained our joint accounts yesterday morning,” I said quietly, the memory of his betrayal stinging fresh. “He took three million dollars. He said he was moving it to a high-yield offshore account for the baby’s future.”

“He attempted to,” my father corrected, typing a swift command into his tablet. “But banking regulations are quite strict when it comes to sudden, massive wire transfers by a secondary account holder. The funds were flagged, halted, and returned to the primary trust overnight. He has exactly eight hundred dollars in a checking account he opened in college. That is his entire net worth.”

I watched Daniel on the screen, physically shoved out of the revolving doors by security, stumbling onto the wet pavement while Vanessa frantically hailed a cab, suddenly desperate to put distance between herself and the humiliation.

“He’s going to come looking for me,” I said, a shiver running down my spine. Daniel was a narcissist; he would not accept this defeat. He would believe he could manipulate me one last time.

“Let him try,” Charles Whitmore replied, his voice a low, terrifying rumble. “He has to get through a mile of private road, a reinforced gate, and fifty armed guards to even look at the walls of this house. You are a Whitmore, Evelyn. It’s time you remembered what that means.”
