Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Daniel

While Clara slept safely in a pure gold-leafed bassinet in the nursery, Daniel’s life continued its spectacular, unyielding descent into absolute ruin.
It took exactly two weeks for Vanessa to realize that Daniel was not a temporarily inconvenienced millionaire, but a permanently bankrupt fraud. My father's intelligence team, who monitored Daniel’s movements like hawks, provided me with a daily briefing over breakfast. I read the reports while feeding Clara, finding a cold, clinical fascination in the destruction of the man who had tried to destroy me.
According to the reports, Vanessa had endured the first few days in a cheap motel, believing Daniel’s frantic promises that he was 'calling his lawyers' and 'suing the board for everything.' But when Daniel’s credit score flatlined and the luxury car they had driven off in was aggressively repossessed from the motel parking lot by Whitmore agents, the romance abruptly died.
The security footage from the motel lobby—provided generously by my father's team—showed Vanessa throwing a half-empty coffee cup at Daniel’s chest, screaming that he was a broke, pathetic liar, before getting into an Uber and blocking his number permanently.
But losing his mistress was only the prologue to his nightmare.
Because Daniel had believed he owned Vance Innovations, he had lived with reckless financial abandon. He had taken out massive personal loans against the company's valuation to fund his lavish lifestyle, illegal sports betting, and expensive gifts for Vanessa. The moment the board fired him and publicly clarified that he held zero equity, his creditors descended like starving wolves.
By week three, Daniel was served with over fifteen separate lawsuits. By week four, the District Attorney’s office, subtly nudged by a very influential Charles Whitmore, opened a criminal investigation into Daniel’s creative accounting practices during his tenure as CEO. He had forged documents to secure personal lines of credit—a federal offense.
Desperation is a dangerous, unpredictable emotion. Backed into a corner with no money, no allies, and impending prison time, Daniel finally realized there was only one person who could possibly save him. The woman he had abandoned.
He began trying to reach me. He called the estate main line hundreds of times, leaving increasingly pathetic, weeping voicemails. He begged for forgiveness. He blamed the stress of the company. He blamed Vanessa for seducing him. He claimed he had a momentary lapse in sanity and that he loved me, loved our 'beautiful unborn child,' entirely unaware that Clara had already been born.
I listened to his voicemails in my father’s study, swirling a cup of expensive tea.
“Do you want me to have the authorities issue a restraining order?” my father asked, looking up from his mahogany desk. “Or I can have security handle him more... directly.”
I shook my head, pausing the audio of Daniel sobbing into the phone. “No. A restraining order means I’m afraid of him. And I am not afraid anymore.”
I looked at the framed photograph of Clara on the desk, feeling a surge of absolute authority. Daniel needed to understand that the girl he married was dead, and the woman he created in her place was untouchable.

“Let him through the gates tomorrow at noon,” I told my father, my voice devoid of any warmth. “Set up a meeting in the glass pavilion. It’s time I looked him in the eye and officially ended this.”
My father’s eyes gleamed with deep, paternal pride. “As you wish, Evelyn. I will ensure the lawyers have the divorce and custody papers ready. He won't leave with a single thread on his back.”
