Chapter 3 - The Morning The Locks Changed And The Credit Froze

At 7:45 AM, the sun cast a pale, cold glare across the glass exterior of Vance Architectural Logistics in downtown Brookside.

Derek Vance stepped out of his black sports coupe, holding a warm paper cup of premium coffee in one hand and a leather portfolio in the other.

He had spent the night at Vanessa’s luxury apartment, celebrating what they believed was a guaranteed financial conquest.

Vanessa had giggled over breakfast about turning Holly’s old playroom into a sunlit nursery for their baby boy.

Derek had promised her that Marissa would fold within forty-eight hours once the pressure of the medical bills mounted.

He adjusted the collar of his designer trench coat, whistling quietly as he approached the glass double doors of his firm.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out his brass master key, and slid it into the main entrance lock.

The key refused to turn.

Derek frowned, wiggling the key with force, thinking the night freeze had jammed the brass tumblers.

He looked closer at the polished steel frame and realized the deadbolt had been replaced entirely with an industrial electronic keypad.

Above the handle, a stark, laminated white placard caught his attention.

NOTICE OF COMMERCIAL LEASE TERMINATION AND PROPERTY SEIZURE.

PURSUANT TO SECTION 8 OF THE COMMERCIAL TENANCY ACT, PREMISES LEASED BY VANCE ARCHITECTURAL LOGISTICS ARE HEREBY REPOSSESSED BY BLUE HERON HOLDINGS LLC.

ALL ASSETS, EQUIPMENT, SERVERS, AND FILES REMAIN SECURED UNDER COURT-APPROVED MARSHAL RESTRAINING ORDER.

Derek dropped his coffee cup onto the clean stone steps, the hot dark liquid splashing over his polished leather shoes.

"What the hell is this?" he muttered aloud, slamming his fist against the shatterproof glass.

Inside the lobby, two broad-shouldered men dressed in tactical private security uniforms stood beside the reception counter.

One of them held a clipboard while the other supervised a locksmith who was finishing the installation of high-grade commercial locks.

Derek pounded violently against the glass pane with both fists.

"Open this damn door!" he screamed, his voice carrying down the quiet street.

"I own this company! I am Derek Vance!"

The taller security guard walked slowly toward the door, holding a legal injunction up against the glass without unlocking it.

"Mr. Vance, you are currently trespassing on private property managed by Rhodes & Evans Asset Management," the guard announced through the external intercom.

"Any attempt to breach this perimeter will result in immediate arrest by the metropolitan police department."

"Rhodes?" Derek barked, his face turning an ugly shade of magenta.

"Rhodes is just an old family acquaintance! Who gave you the authority to lock my employees out?"

"Your master lease was voided at 12:01 AM due to fraudulent asset transfer and material breach of trust covenants," the voice replied calmly.

"Your employees were notified via corporate email two hours ago that the office is indefinitely closed."

"Please direct all inquiries to Ms. Clara Evans."

Derek stumbled backward off the front steps, his chest heaving as if he had run a marathon.

He pulled his smartphone from his coat, his fingers trembling with frantic adrenaline.

He dialed the direct line to his private corporate banker, Marcus Higgins.

"Marcus! Pick up the damn phone!" Derek yelled into the receiver the second the line clicked open.

"Derek, I was just about to call your personal cell," Marcus’s voice sounded tense, hurried, and noticeably devoid of its usual friendly warmth.

"What is going on with your firm's accounts?"

"That's what I'm calling you about!" Derek shouted, pacing back and forth in front of the locked doors.

"Some fraudulent outfit called Blue Heron Holdings put security guards outside my office!"

"Clear this mess up right now and release an emergency credit line so I can hire a litigation team!"

There was a heavy rustle of papers on the other end of the line.

"Derek, I can't do that," Marcus stated bluntly.

"In fact, I just finished processing a total freeze on your commercial operating line, your payroll accounts, and your personal Platinum reserve."

"What did you just say?" Derek gasped, stopping dead in his tracks.

"The primary collateral backing your five-hundred-thousand-dollar business credit line wasn't your personal revenue," Marcus explained cold-bloodedly.

"It was an institutional guarantee bond held by the Evelyn Miller Living Trust."

"The managing trustee, Calvin Rhodes, filed a verified revocation of guarantee at midnight, backed by proof of corporate misappropriation."

"Without that trust backing, your credit line is in immediate default."

"The bank has exercised its legal right of set-off."

"Every dollar in your operating account has been swept to cover the outstanding principal balances."

"You are currently five thousand dollars overdrawn across your commercial accounts, Derek."

Derek’s phone slipped an inch through his sweaty fingers before he caught it against his ear.

"That’s impossible! What about my personal checking? What about the joint account with Marissa?"

"The joint account was liquidated early this morning by the primary signatory, Marissa Vance, who transferred the remaining balance into an approved medical trust for Holly Vance," Marcus said.

"As for your personal account, it was frozen under a court order obtained by Clara Evans regarding the unauthorized diversion of trust assets."

"You don't have access to capital here, Derek."

"I suggest you find a very good defense attorney."

Marcus hung up before Derek could utter another word.

A cold panic, sharp and suffocating, wrapped around Derek’s throat.

He stood on the pavement outside his locked empire, watched by curious commuters passing by on their morning routines.

Suddenly, his phone vibrated violently in his palm, displaying Vanessa’s frantic caller ID.

Derek pressed the button, putting the phone to his ear with a shaking hand.

"Derek! Where are you?!" Vanessa shrieked through the speaker, her voice shrill with hysterical terror.

"There are two county sheriff deputies standing in the driveway of the Crestview house!"

"They are unloading moving boxes and serving an emergency eviction notice!"

"They’re saying my name isn't on the deed and that the purchase money came from stolen trust funds!"

"Derek, they are telling me I have one hour to pack my personal clothes and vacate the property!"

"Do something! My baby cannot be born on the street!"

May you like

Derek closed his eyes, leaning his back against a cold concrete pillar as the world he thought he controlled collapsed into jagged pieces.

The phone in his hand felt like lead, and across town, the sound of a medical transport helicopter roared into the morning sky.
