Chapter 8 - The Boston Sanctuary And The Miraculous Turnaround

Five hundred miles north, inside the bright, sun-drenched recovery suite of Boston Children’s Hospital, the atmosphere felt like another universe entirely.
The heavy scent of antiseptic had been replaced by the delicate fragrance of fresh white lilies sent by the hospital foundation board.
Holly sat propped up against a stack of embroidered pillows, wearing a bright pink zip-up hoodie that matched her returning color.
Her hair, though still short from previous treatments, was soft and framing a face that now wore a wide, genuine smile.
In her lap sat an intricate Lego castle we had spent the entire morning building together.
"Mommy, look! The dragon goes right on the tallest tower!" Holly announced excitedly, holding up a small plastic beast with green wings.
I laughed, leaning over to kiss her cheek, feeling the warm, healthy glow of her skin against my lips.
"That is the best tower yet, sweetie," I murmured, my heart swelling with a deep, unbreakable gratitude.
The door opened softly, and Dr. Alistair Vance walked in, holding a fresh medical chart and smiling broadly.
"Well, look who’s building empires today," Dr. Vance said warmly, stopping at the foot of the bed.
"Good morning, Dr. Vance!" Holly greeted him cheerfully, holding up her Lego creation.
"I see engineering skills run strong in this family," the doctor chuckled, turning to me with a reassuring nod.
"Ms. Vance, I have the results from the latest laboratory panel taken an hour ago."
I stood up instantly, my pulse quickening with cautious hope.
"Is the blast cell count stable?" I asked.
"It's better than stable," Dr. Vance said, opening the chart to reveal glowing digital graphs.
"The targeted molecular therapy has successfully neutralized ninety-eight percent of the residual leukemia markers."
"Her bone marrow is showing active regeneration of healthy white blood cells."
"At this rate, if she continues responding for the next three weeks, we can transition her from inpatient isolation to outpatient recovery right here in Boston."
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy welled up in my eyes, spilling over my lashes before I could brush them away.
"Thank you, Doctor... thank you so much," I choked out, pressing my hands together.
"Don't thank me, Marissa," Dr. Vance replied gently, placing a hand on my shoulder.
"Thank your own persistence, your mother’s foresight in establishing specialized medical endowments, and the fact that you refused to let anyone compromise your daughter’s survival."
"You gave her a second chance at life."
After the doctor left, Holly looked up at me with her bright, intelligent eyes, tilting her head slightly.
"Mommy, are we ever going back to the old house?" she asked softly.
I stroked her soft hair, feeling a wave of absolute peace wash over my soul.
"No, baby," I answered honestly, looking out the large bay window toward the Boston skyline bathed in golden autumn sunlight.
"We are never going back there."
"We are going to build a brand new home—somewhere peaceful, safe, and filled with love."
Holly smiled, satisfied with the answer, and turned back to her Lego castle.
My phone buzzed quietly on the bedside table, displaying a secure notification from Clara Evans.
I picked it up and unlocked the screen.
FEDERAL GRAND JURY INDICTMENT FILED AGAINST DEREK VANCE THIS MORNING.
ASSETS SEIZED, ARREST WARRANT ISSUED.
YOU ARE COMPLETELY SAFE, MARISSA.

I locked the phone, set it back down, and took a deep, steady breath of clean air.
The nightmare was ending, and our new life was finally beginning.
