Chapter 3 - The Morning After

Daniel woke up Monday morning with a smug sense of satisfaction. I could picture it perfectly. He probably rolled over in our sprawling king-sized bed at his city townhouse, expecting to see a text from me begging for forgiveness.
Instead, his phone was entirely silent from my end.
According to the reports Arthur forwarded me in real-time, Daniel’s morning spiraled into a nightmare faster than he could process.
It started at his favorite artisanal coffee shop. He tried to buy a seven-dollar espresso, and his black American Express card was declined. He scoffed, assuming it was a bank error, and used his corporate card. Declined.
Frustrated but oblivious, he drove to his company headquarters.
When he swiped his keycard at the glass turnstiles of Hawthorne Innovations, the light flashed red. Access denied. A security guard—a man Daniel usually ignored—stepped forward, looking uncomfortable.
"Mr. Hawthorne, sir. The board requested you not enter the building. Your belongings have been boxed and are waiting in the loading dock."
"Are you out of your mind?" Daniel roared, causing employees in the lobby to stop and stare. "I am the CEO! I own this company!"
"Actually, Daniel, you don't."
The cold voice belonged to Richard Hayes, the Chairman of the Board. He stepped out of the private elevator, holding a thick legal folder.
"What is the meaning of this, Richard?" Daniel demanded, adjusting his tie to reassert his authority. "If this is about the quarterly dip, I already told you I'm handling it."
"This is about the fact that our primary backer, Vanguard Holdings, has pulled all funding effectively immediately due to a breach of character clause in your contract," Richard explained, his voice echoing in the quiet lobby. "They’ve also called in the entirety of the bridge loan. Hawthorne Innovations is functionally bankrupt as of 8:00 AM this morning."
Daniel’s face drained of color. "Vanguard? They can't do that! Let me call their CEO. Let me talk to whoever is running that ghost ship!"
"You already know her, Daniel," Richard said softly, handing him the folder. "Vanguard Holdings is the private asset management firm of Elena Vance. Your wife."
Daniel stared at the paper. He saw my name printed in stark black ink. Elena Vance, Sole Proprietor and CEO.
"No," Daniel whispered, the paper shaking in his hands. "No, Elena is a stay-at-home mother. She organizes playdates. She… she doesn't have this kind of capital."
"She has all the capital, Daniel. She bought your father's debt. She saved this company. You were a figurehead, allowed to sit in the big chair because she loved you," Richard said, showing no pity. "And I don't know what you did to her this weekend, but she just fired you. Security will escort you out."

Daniel stumbled backward, his entire identity shattering in front of his staff. He reached for his phone with trembling hands and dialed my number.
I was sitting in a sunlit café across town, feeding Noah blueberry pancakes. When I saw Daniel's name flash on the screen, I didn't decline the call. I simply let it ring until it went to voicemail, over and over again, enjoying the sound of his empire crumbling.
