Chapter 5 - Desperation at the Gates

It took Daniel two days to find me.

He couldn't access his bank accounts, his friends were suddenly "out of town" when he asked for loans, and he was sleeping on a cheap sofa in his brother's cramped apartment. His mother was hysterical, constantly calling him and blaming him for the loss of her precious house.

He finally tracked me down through my private pediatrician's office, showing up unannounced at my penthouse building.

The concierge called up to inform me that a highly agitated man claiming to be my husband was demanding entry.

"Send him up to the lobby level private meeting room," I instructed. "I'll be right down."

I didn't dress up for him. I wore comfortable cashmere loungewear, my hair tied in a loose bun. I didn't need power suits to project dominance anymore. The power was in my bones.

When I walked into the glass-walled meeting room, Daniel looked like he had aged ten years. His designer suit was wrinkled, he hadn't shaved, and the arrogant spark in his eyes had been entirely extinguished, replaced by a frantic, hollow panic.

"Elena!" He rushed toward me, trying to grab my hands. I took a deliberate step back, crossing my arms. He stopped, looking hurt.

"What are you doing, Elena?" he pleaded, his voice cracking. "My company. The house. My mother is living in a Motel 6! You destroyed my entire life in forty-eight hours!"

"Correction, Daniel," I said coolly. "I simply stopped funding your delusion. You destroyed your own life the moment you chose your mother's pride over your son's heartbeat."

"It was an accident!" he yelled, pacing the room. "She didn't know the allergy was that severe! You overreacted, and then you stole my life!"

I let out a sharp, bitter laugh. "She didn't know? Daniel, we have sent her Noah's medical files. I have verbally told her fifty times. She did it on purpose to prove a point, to show that she had power over me and my parenting. She used our child as a pawn in her twisted mind games."

Daniel ran his hands through his hair, looking desperate. "Okay, okay, she was wrong! I'll make her apologize. I'll cut her off! Just... please, put the money back. Re-sign the lease. I'm begging you, Elena. I'm your husband. We are a team."

"We were never a team," I stated, staring directly into his bloodshot eyes. "I was your safety net, and you were a black hole of validation. When Noah couldn't breathe, you didn't look at him once. You looked at the audience. You were mad that I made a scene."

"I was shocked! I didn't know what to do!"

"I did," I snapped. "I saved him. And then you told me to pack my bags. So I did. I just happened to pack the entire Hawthorne legacy in my suitcase on the way out."

He dropped to his knees. Actual tears spilled down his cheeks. The great Daniel Hawthorne, begging like a child. "Please, Elena. For Noah. Don't do this to Noah's father."

"Do not use his name to manipulate me," I warned, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I have already filed for divorce, Daniel. I have also filed for emergency sole custody, citing severe medical endangerment. You will not see him unsupervised again."

"You can't take my son!" he roared, jumping up.

May you like

"I already have," I said, turning my back on him. "My lawyer will contact you. Don't ever show up here again, or I'll have you arrested for trespassing."

I walked out of the room, leaving him standing in the cold, corporate glass box, entirely alone with the consequences of his actions.
