Chapter 1 - Daddy Helped Grandma Tie Me

I came home early and heard my four-year-old crying before I even opened the door.
Then I heard another voice.
Cold.
Sharp.
Ringing through the quiet hallway like a slap.
“Crying won’t save you.”
My blood ran cold.
“Mommy… please…”
The latch gave way under my trembling hand.
I dropped my purse on the hardwood floor and ran blindly toward the living room.
My daughter, Lily, was sitting on the cold floor in the corner.
Her knees were pulled tight to her chest.
Around her tiny wrists was a pale silk scarf.
Tied tight into a knot.
Her skin was mottled red and raw where the fabric dug in.
My mother-in-law, Diane, stood over her with her arms crossed.
She was sipping lukewarm chamomile tea.
I froze in the doorway, the air sucked clean out of my lungs.
“What did you do to my child?”
Diane didn’t even look startled.
She didn’t drop her cup.
She didn’t even blink.
“She needed to learn that crying doesn’t get her whatever she wants.”
Lily saw me through swollen eyelids and started sobbing harder.
“Mommy, Grandma said I’m bad.”
I rushed forward and dropped to my knees on the rug.
My fingers were trembling so violently I could barely work the knot loose.
Diane stepped forward and grabbed my shoulder.
Her nails bit through my thin blouse.
“Don’t interfere when I’m disciplining her, Sarah.”
I spun around with a fury that shook my entire body.
“You tied up a four-year-old!”
“She threw her apple juice on my Persian rug.”
“She spilled it!”
“She threw it, Sarah. Stop raising such a spoiled little brat.”
Lily buried her wet face against my collarbone, her small body convulsing with silent tremors.
Then Diane reached down, clawing at Lily’s arm to drag her backward.
“Give her here. She sits in time-out until I say so.”
I slapped her hand away with a crack that echoed off the high ceiling.
“Don’t touch my daughter again!”
Diane’s eyes flashed with venom.
She shoved me backward by the collar of my jacket.
“You think you can disrespect me in my son’s house?”
I pushed myself between her and Lily, shielding my baby with my whole body.
“If protecting my child is disrespectful, then yes!”
Diane suddenly lunged, her fingers tangling hard into my hair.
Pain shot through my scalp.
I grabbed her wrists, digging my heels in as we stumbled against the coffee table.
Lily screamed, a pure, piercing sound of raw terror.
“Stop hurting Mommy!”
That scream changed something inside my soul.
The polite daughter-in-law died right there on that floor.
I twisted hard, wrenching Diane’s hands away and shoving her into the sofa.
I stood panting, towering over the woman who had terrorized our family for years.
“You are never being alone with Lily again.”
Diane smoothed her cashmere cardigan, her face suddenly becoming strangely calm.
Then her thin lips stretched into a cruel, satisfied smile.
“You should probably ask your husband about that.”
My stomach dropped through the floorboards.
“What are you talking about?”
Diane pointed a manicured finger toward the hallway.
“Ryan knew exactly how I was teaching her.”
Lily slowly lifted her tear-covered face from my shirt.
Her little bottom lip trembled.

Then she whispered five words that made my knees go weak.
“Daddy helped Grandma tie me.”
