Chapter 10 - Diane’s Fall From Grace

By sunrise, the story had completely exploded.

Diane Vance wasn’t just an ordinary mother-in-law.

She was the chairwoman of the county historic society and a prominent socialite whose face appeared on local charity billboards.

When local reporters learned she had been hauled out of her suburban home in handcuffs at 2:00 AM, wearing silk pajamas and screaming obscenities at arresting officers, the media devoured it.

I sat in the district attorney’s office with a warm cup of coffee.

Across from me sat District Attorney Margaret Hayes, a no-nonsense prosecutor with twenty years of experience taking down corrupt officials.

Beside me sat my family law attorney, a fierce litigator named Amanda Ross, whom Elena had called at dawn.

Amanda had already filed for an immediate emergency restraining order and full, sole legal and physical custody of Lily.

“The evidence you provided is ironclad, Mrs. Vance,” DA Hayes said, tapping the printed forensic report of the surveillance footage.

“The video clearly establishes premeditation, unlawful restraint of a toddler, and conspiracy to commit high-value insurance fraud.”

“What about Diane’s gambling debts?” I asked.

Amanda pushed a thick manila folder across the mahogany desk.

“State investigators raided Diane’s personal accounts early this morning,” Amanda explained.

“It’s far worse than Ryan admitted last night.”

I opened the file.

Diane had squandered her late husband’s entire life pension at underground casinos across three states.

She had taken out secondary mortgages on her son’s properties using forged powers of attorney.

When the creditors threatened to seize her luxury condo, she devised the sickest escape hatch imaginable:

Stage a pattern of chronic child instability.

Document multiple medical ER visits for Lily.

Increase the life and disability insurance to an exorbitant sum.

And then engineer a tragic “staircase accident” while Sarah was at work.

A cold shiver crawled down my spine.

They weren't just going to disable Lily for a payout.

They were planning to kill my baby.

If I hadn’t come home early yesterday afternoon, Lily might not have survived the month.

My knuckles turned white against the edge of the desk.

“Will they get bail?” I asked, looking DA Hayes dead in the eye.

“Judge Henderson recused herself this morning after learning her name was invoked,” Hayes said firmly.

“The new presiding magistrate set Diane’s bail at two million dollars in cash, recognizing her as an extreme flight risk.”

“And Ryan?”

“Ryan’s bail is five hundred thousand dollars. But he doesn’t have the money. Diane emptied his accounts last week.”

A knock sounded at the office door, and an assistant poked her head inside.

“District Attorney Hayes, Diane Vance’s defense attorney is on line two. They’re offering a full confession from Diane in exchange for dropping the aggravated cruelty charge.”

I stood up before Hayes could even touch the phone.

“Tell them no deals,” I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor.

“I want the jury to see that video.”

“I want the entire world to see what they did to my little girl.”
