Chapter 2 - The Threshold of Revelation

The brass doorknob felt freezing beneath my trembling fingers. Every second stretched like an eternity while Trevor stared at me with wide, panicked eyes, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He let go of my arm abruptly, stepping back into the shadows of the hallway as if distance could erase what he had just done. I pulled the heavy wooden door open just an inch, the security chain still holding fast. My father’s silver hair caught the porch light, his distinguished face lined with deep lines of genuine anxiety. When his sharp blue eyes dropped down and registered the blood smeared across my chin and shirt, his expression transformed from worry into absolute, chilling fury.

"Rebecca," my father breathed, his voice dropping an octave into a low, rumbling growl that had made boardroom executives tremble for decades. "What happened to you?"

"Dad," I choked out, the single word fracturing under the weight of years of silent suffering. "I... I just had a little accident."

"Unlock that chain right now," he commanded, his authority absolute. "Open this door."

Before I could unlatch the metal guard, a sudden movement materialized behind me. Trevor stepped into the foyer, forcing a tight, incredibly false smile onto his face as he slid his arm around my waist, his grip on my side hidden just enough from my father's immediate line of sight. It was a silent, agonizing threat wrapped in domestic performance.

"Richard! What a wonderful surprise," Trevor said, his voice pitching up into an unnatural, cheerful cadence. "We weren't expecting visitors today. Rebecca had a clumsy fall down the stairs. She’s alright, just a bit shaken up."

My father didn't return the smile. His eyes locked onto Trevor’s hand resting on my waist, noticing the white-knuckled tension in Trevor’s fingers. My father had built an empire by reading people, by spotting deception in contracts and body language within seconds. He saw right through the performance instantly.

"Take your hands off her," my father said quietly. It wasn't a request. It was an execution order.

Trevor hesitated, his fingers tightening defensively for a microsecond before he dropped his hand. "Come on, Richard, you know how clumsy she gets, especially being six months pregnant. It's a hazard."

"I didn't ask you, Trevor," my father said, his gaze never leaving my bleeding mouth. "Rebecca, unlock this door or I will kick it off its hinges."

I didn't hesitate anymore. My fingers slipped the security chain off the track, and the heavy door swung wide open. The moment the threshold cleared, my father stepped inside, bypassing Trevor completely to drop down on one knee right in front of me and little Emma. His calloused hand gently cupped my uninjured cheek, his thumb brushing away a tear mixed with blood.

"Who did this?" my father whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying rage.

Trevor stepped forward, trying to interject with another practiced lie. "Richard, you're making a big deal out of nothing. It was an accident, I swear—"

"Shut your mouth," my father cut him off without even looking back. He turned his head slowly toward Trevor, and the cold, dead-eyed glare he gave my husband made Trevor physically recoil. "If you ever speak in my presence again while my daughter is bleeding, I will ensure you spend the rest of your natural life wishing you had never been born."

Emma buried her face in my neck, whimpering softly at the sudden hostility filling the room. I looked down at my father, realizing that the secret I had guarded for three agonizing years had just been shattered into a million irreversible pieces. There was no going back to the lies now.
