Chapter 4 - Packing the Past

The master bedroom felt smaller than it ever had, the air thick with the suffocating scent of Trevor’s cologne mixed with the metallic tang of my own blood. I knelt beside the closet floor, pulling down two large suitcases that had sat untouched since our last family vacation—a trip where Trevor had spent four days ignoring us to play golf with his coworkers. My hands moved with mechanical precision, tossing clothes, diapers, and Emma's favorite stuffed bunny into the bags. Every zipper felt like the closing of a chapter I should have ended years ago.
From down the hall, I could hear the muffled, angry murmurs of my father standing guard over Trevor, who was apparently nursing a bruised jaw on the living room sofa. My father had made it explicitly clear that if Trevor so much as twitch toward our direction, the consequences would extend far beyond a single punch.
The bedroom door creaked open, and Trevor slipped inside, holding an ice pack gingerly against his swelling jaw. His eyes were bloodshot, shifting rapidly between pure rage and a sickeningly sweet manipulation that made my stomach churn.
"Becca, please," Trevor whispered, taking a hesitant step toward me. He crouched down beside me, trying to reach for my hand. I flinched away as if he were a hot iron. "You're blowing this way out of proportion. It was a mistake. Hormones are running high for both of us. We can go to counseling. I'll change, I swear to God I will."
I stopped folding a stack of tiny toddler shirts and looked directly into his eyes. There was no fear left in me, only a profound, hollow exhaustion.
"You said that after the first time, Trevor," I said quietly. "And after the second. And every single time after that."
"This is your father getting inside your head!" Trevor hissed, his mask slipping for a split second before he desperately forced it back on. "He's rich, he thinks he owns the world, and he's looking for an excuse to tear us apart! Think about our unborn baby! You're breaking up a family over a slip of the tongue and a bad accident!"
"You punched me in the mouth while I was holding our daughter," I replied, my voice chillingly calm. "You didn't slip. You aimed."
Trevor’s jaw tightened, the ice pack slipping from his fingers onto the carpet. Realizing that his usual playbook of gaslighting and emotional blackmail wasn't working, a dark, venomous look crossed his features.
"You think you're safe because your daddy is rich?" Trevor sneered, standing up and towering over me once more. "You're nothing without me. You're soft, you're dependent, and the courts will see right through your family's money. I'll get joint custody of Emma. I'll be in your life forever, Becca. You'll never escape me."
The threat hung in the air, sharp and poisonous. For a second, a cold chill brushed my spine. But then I remembered the kick of the baby inside my womb and the trusting grip of Emma's little hands. Trevor thought he held all the cards because he knew my past insecurities. He didn't know what my father had already set in motion downstairs.
I zipped the suitcase shut with a definitive zip, stood up, and looked him straight in the eye.

"Let's see how much custody you get when my father's legal team finishes reviewing your company's financial records," I said smoothly.
Trevor froze, color draining from his face as if he had just seen a ghost. Before he could speak, I walked right past him out of the room, leaving him alone in the wreckage of the life he had systematically destroyed.
